Anyone contemplating voting No! for the first time in the upcoming Lisbon 2 referendum in Ireland really ought know the name of the candidates to be the first president of the EU. After all it's not a completely done thing that once the Irish get their answer "right", Tony Blair will sweep into the history books. The current chancillor of Germany, Angela Merckel is another leading candidate as are former prime ministers of Sweden and Luxembourg......"anyway"....... Germany is in the news globally at the moment for several reasons. First the fact that last Friday its army ordered an attack by the USAF on a fuel tanker in Afghanistan which resulted in the deaths of over 80 civilians. Second because it is running into elections. Third because its AIDS awareness people have presented a publicity image of Hitler shagging a girlie from behind with the caption "AIDS is a mass murderer". Here follows a miscellany of links in English so you can keep abreast. ... read full story / add a comment

This article covers the continuing crisis in Iran, workers struggles, prisoners hunger strikes, the show trials and the Regimes problems in getting a new Cabinet appointed. Full text of article at link below. Over the last few weeks, following the show trials of ‘reformist’ personalities and the imposition of even more severe forms of repression in Iran, the nature of protests has changed considerably. However, demonstrations continue on a daily basis in Tehran and most other Iranian cities, with numbers attending ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. Reports from the working class neighbourhoods of Tehran, such as Ekbatan, Apadana and Karaj, and from the white-collar suburbs of Tehran Pars, indicate that anti-government demonstrations take place every night and often lead to confrontation between protesters and Bassij militia. Last week dozens of political prisoners started a hunger strike in Evin prison and on the first day of Ramadan families of those arrested in recent protests gathered outside calling for the immediate release of all political detainees. There are daily protests in factories and workplaces against the political and economic conditions and in some provinces, including Khorassan, there is news of peasants protesting against confiscation of their land by religious authorities. Five hundred peasants from Sarakhss have staged a sit-in for the last week in front of Mashad’s main petrol station, complaining about the use of religious legislation to expropriate their land. ... read full story / add a comment
Google has added Irish Gaeilge, Yidish, Welsh, Belarussian, Macedonian, Afrikaans, Swahili, Mali and Icelandic to the suite of languages which its free online translation tool supports. The last upgrade to the list which currently offers 51 languages was the inclusion of Persian or Farsi, an update which we remember occured during the "green revolution" and allowed us all to follow events in Iran without paying to much attention to tweeting twits based in US lobby offices. This great news now means we will be able to follow similar events as they happen in Ireland without having to study Gaeilge, understand Hector or even own a copy of the Bunreacht. ... read full story / add a comment

A vast untapped pool of ideas, innovation and enthusiasm lies patiently in waiting but with growing frustration. Instead of opening up the corridors of commentary, debate and decision-making to a dynamic new generation of thinkers and leaders (35% of the population is under 25) Ireland remains shackled to the fading authority of industry, politics and religion. While each of these traditional pillars is rapidly losing credibility, they still call the shots. ... read full story / add a comment

In December 2008, we created an anti-fascist mural in Bochum, to commemorate those seven anti-fascist from different european countries, who had been killed by neo-nazis during the last years. Maziar Razi outlines the reality of life for workers in Iran and points out why chavez is mistaken in his support for Ahmadinejad. The appeal is made to the workers of Venezuela. Full story at url below. The Revolutionary Marxists of Iran are aware of your achievements as part of the Bolivarian Movement and have always supported this movement against the widespread lies and the interference of imperialism. In order to defend your invaluable movement labour and student activists have set up the ‘Hands Off Venezuela’ campaign in Iran and during the past few years have stood together with you in confronting the imperialist attacks. It is obvious that your achievements were gained under the leadership of Hugo Chávez and, for this reason, you reserve deep respect for him. In terms of his foreign policy, however, Chávez has made a mistake. By supporting Ahmadinejad he has ignored the solidarity of the workers and students of Iran with your revolution, and made it look worthless. ... read full story / add a comment

Many people are worried about the militarism implicit in the text of the Lisbon Treaty. If passed, it will effectively makes arguments for disarmament and reduction in military capabilities illegal and redundant, as each will be constitutionally obliged to increase its weapons spending. In today's Irish Times, Roger Cole of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance argues that a vote in favour undermines the fight for Irish independence, democracy and neutrality. ... read full story / add a comment

With a headline like that the story really does deserve a place in the "other press" section, no? It's David Shayler again. For those who don't remember him, he was a MI5 whistleblower whose revelations included such delights as one of the general knowledge questions he was asked upon being recruited (put the English titles of nobility in order*) and that the Brits wanted to assassinate Colonel Ghadaffi back in the days before we spellt his name Qhadaffi. Johnson: The priest, the clown and the life of protest By Bill Johnson Denver Post Columnist Posted: 08/07/2009 01:00:00 AM MDT Father Carl Kabat awoke early Thursday morning, put on his clerical collar, grabbed his clown suit and quietly strolled out of his longtime friend's Arvada home. William Strabala, who has known the Catholic priest since their days in the seminary more than 50 years ago and had hosted him since he arrived from St. Louis, simply sighed. It was pointless, he knew, to attempt to talk the 75-year-old priest out of what he was about to do. ... read full story / add a comment
