RTE have given coverage to a housing demonstration in Galway this evening that aimed to highlight a common problem around the country which is the shortage of housing. The protest is demanding that the government start building public housing instead of relying on the private sector which are preying on people. ... read full story / add a comment
The 2016 Census has again revealed there is no housing crisis. In fact about 1 in 8 houses were empty, a massive 259,562 dwellings in all. So why are their hundreds of homeless on the streets and thousands in emergency accommodation. Why are rents soaring, particularly in Dublin, to level that mean most people can no longer afford to rent there? Why have house prices continued to increase far, far beyond the reach of the average worker? ... read full story / add a comment
Homeless has steadily risen in the last few years and is now at crisis level. However the state is not interested and likes to imply high rates means the economy is doing well. It actually means we're just being screwed even more. The eviction last week with the full support of the Garda shows where the State's loyalty is and that is with landlords. In this case we have a house abandoned for years, but once they realize there is a squat there no resources are spared to evict people out on the street even if they have to smash up the place to do so. Bottom line is that they would rather wreck a house than have people paying no rent. Notice also how the law doesn't apply to them. See the report below from the WSM. Monday (Jan 18th) saw an eviction without court order in Dublin involving Garda and private security / builders at Villa Park, Dublin 7. The house had been left abandoned for at least two years according to neighbours before being brought back into use last October by people who needed a home. One of them told us that it was a “Beautiful house that was to be demolished in order to make a new route to warehouse / bakery behind it but neighbours objected and planning permission was refused. The person claiming ownership seemed to be very wealthy and is listed as a director of over 28 companies.” ... read full story / add a comment

The controversy over NAMA's sale of the Nothern Ireland loan portfolio, Project Eagle, has not gone away. It suited the Government just fine when the PAC said they would bring NAMA before the committee. - It also suited NAMA, whose polished performance was always going to give them some breathing space, given that the PAC, - no disrespect to any of it's members - just doesn't have the wherewithal to hold them to account. Here is a part of my piece on the workings of NAMA from last Tuesday, when we were debating a Housing Bill . - ... read full story / add a comment

Emergency situation in Calais! All squats and camps will be evicted in the next few days! In the course of the next few days, three camps will be destroyed by the police. More than 600 people live in these camps, which were won through constant migrant struggle after a long series of evictions. No solution has been proposed for the evicted migrants. Moreover, a social center and two further squats are up for eviction starting on May 30th. All told, more than 800 people will be put on to the street. ... read full story / add a comment

There is a new squat in Dublin up in Grangegorman where all the DITs will be moving in the next few years. It has been setup by a group of political squatters. They now face eviction from the row of empty, unused, rotting houses in Lower Grangegorman and they are asking people to come and help resist. - 300,000 empty houses in Ireland, 5,000 people homeless -- The WSM caught up with them for an interview last week to find out more.... ... read full story / add a comment
Parents died leaving Family home intestate. Mick, one of the sons took out a High Court administration form and sold the family without consulting with his brother and four sisters. With a headline like that the story really does deserve a place in the "other press" section, no? It's David Shayler again. For those who don't remember him, he was a MI5 whistleblower whose revelations included such delights as one of the general knowledge questions he was asked upon being recruited (put the English titles of nobility in order*) and that the Brits wanted to assassinate Colonel Ghadaffi back in the days before we spellt his name Qhadaffi. (with a Q). Since the whistleblowing, was the exile with spy girlfriend in France, and then things got juicy. ... read full story / add a comment

In a clear example of the hollowness of politicians in the current economic crisis, where they claim the bailouts to the wealthy are designed to help the ordinary people, a British court ruling has now up the ante on the attack against the people by allowing a ruling which permits people to be evicted from their homes after missing just 2 monthly payments ... read full story / add a comment

Anyone going down to RTE news today will see how they've put a little "interactive" twist on the news that a flight from Lisbon almost crashed in Santry. A thumbnail picture accompanies the story http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0919/air.html of the hotel which is reported as being a 16 storey building at Santry Cross at night with the caption "you be the judge". Then you get to see another picture of the building during the day. Cool. You be the judge. Relax now. You are presently at the controls of a DC 9-83 passenger jet with 4 other crew members and 112 passengers slowing down on your cruise speed of (504 mph, 811 km/h) beginning a standard descent of no more than 2% declination. Feel good? Confident? Skittish? Not worrying about the 72,600 kg weight you could wallop? Now do those lights which look like an airstrip on the big hotel just in front of hte airstrip confuse you?? ... read full story / add a comment

"If you accept that the bubble has popped, which most casual observers would, then we will have a period of rising inventories, falling sales and static price growth. There is nothing supporting current valuations, no supply deficit, potential investment returns, prospects of cheaper financing or outside macro economic developments.
