Sunday World is reporting on the forced shutdown of a soup kitchen in Dublin for the homeless because the group were not registered as a charity.. However the group say due to the excessive regulation imposed that if they registered as a charity their costs would escalate and they would be forced to make it commercial. And this appears to be exactly the goal of the government to stop any voluntary soup kitchens and so prevent the likes of 200+ homeless people showing up to be fed on Grafton street.. It embarrass es the government too much ... read full story / add a comment

Statement on Cops at Dublin Pride On the 25th of June, while Gardai were marching in the Dublin Pride Parade and being celebrated by corporate and liberal gays, we decided to ruin their party. Companies and cops have no place in Pride. Large parts of our community still face attacks from Gardai on a daily basis. They are complicit, if not the key player, in our oppression, yet are invited to march in a parade that is rooted in a struggle against them. Have you forgotten Stonewall? We have not. This is why, on the 25th of June, we welcomed them with smoke bombs and flares. Led by sex workers and accomplices, this action was carried out in retaliation against the violence they perpetrate against our community. ... read full story / add a comment
The 2016 Census has again revealed there is no housing crisis. In fact about 1 in 8 houses were empty, a massive 259,562 dwellings in all. So why are their hundreds of homeless on the streets and thousands in emergency accommodation. Why are rents soaring, particularly in Dublin, to level that mean most people can no longer afford to rent there? Why have house prices continued to increase far, far beyond the reach of the average worker? ... read full story / add a comment
Homeless has steadily risen in the last few years and is now at crisis level. However the state is not interested and likes to imply high rates means the economy is doing well. It actually means we're just being screwed even more. The eviction last week with the full support of the Garda shows where the State's loyalty is and that is with landlords. In this case we have a house abandoned for years, but once they realize there is a squat there no resources are spared to evict people out on the street even if they have to smash up the place to do so. Bottom line is that they would rather wreck a house than have people paying no rent. Notice also how the law doesn't apply to them. See the report below from the WSM. Monday (Jan 18th) saw an eviction without court order in Dublin involving Garda and private security / builders at Villa Park, Dublin 7. The house had been left abandoned for at least two years according to neighbours before being brought back into use last October by people who needed a home. One of them told us that it was a “Beautiful house that was to be demolished in order to make a new route to warehouse / bakery behind it but neighbours objected and planning permission was refused. The person claiming ownership seemed to be very wealthy and is listed as a director of over 28 companies.” ... read full story / add a comment

In a further confirmation of the empty nature of electoral democracy its been revealed that the Dublin City Council manager wrote to the company building the controversial Poolbeg incinerator to assure them they could ignore the two city council votes against the project. This after a special meeting when 50 out of 52 councillors voted against the proposal!

There is a new squat in Dublin up in Grangegorman where all the DITs will be moving in the next few years. It has been setup by a group of political squatters. They now face eviction from the row of empty, unused, rotting houses in Lower Grangegorman and they are asking people to come and help resist. - 300,000 empty houses in Ireland, 5,000 people homeless -- The WSM caught up with them for an interview last week to find out more.... ... read full story / add a comment

The latest news from Dublin City Council is that they plan to cut down 300 mature trees in order to improve Merrion Square park. Apparently it is all in the name of giving it a facelift! The council don't seem to realize that one of the most attractive features of the park is the 300 or so mature trees. Do they not realize it is a tourist attraction as it is? Who knows what their logic is but some lucky Tree Surgeon company is going to get a big windfall here which begs the question. Were the advisers behind this outlandish decision people who were going to gain by it in some way ? The story has been reported widely in the last week or so in the press. ... read full story / add a comment
