AI is a misnomer, says Joanna Gray. It's not and will never be 'intelligent'. The fact that human 'super recognisers' are needed to spot the mistakes that AI makes at least 25% of the time should be proof enough.

The ongoing Fukushima nuclear crisis has raised numerous concerns, the candor of pronouncements regarding the reality of circumstances being one of them. As many wonder what the future will hold, the events reported in this article suggest some possible conclusions, the facts being less than reassuring.

Full text and links to article's source documents only available on Common Dreams at url below.

As radiation counts elevate in Japan, news of nuclear contamination spreading across a widening spectrum of life and its necessities, official pronouncements continue to play down events’ gravity. While some have questioned whether this is being pursued to promote calm, or perhaps the nuclear industry, the result has left many either skeptical of official claims or simply reassured by them. It seems time for some difficult facts. ... read full story / add a comment

Shatter condemns criticisms of judiciary in wake of tribunal

The Justice Minister Alan Shatter has hit out at what he has called "intemperate attacks" on the judiciary. Alan Shatter's released a statement this evening, condemning a number of comments made in the wake of the Moriarty report published earlier this week, which he said were "intended to bring the judiciary into disrepute and to undermine public confidence in the administration of justice." Minister Shatter said the statements which he claimed " endanger public confidence" in the judiciary and the courts, are "entirely unacceptable and are to be deplored".

Both former Minister Michael Lowry and Businessman Denis O'Brien have been critical of Mr. Justice Michael Moriarty in the wake of the report.

I'm posting here, a very interesting article by Michael Albert of Z Space/Z Mag in which he looks at the idea of differences of opinion on the left and teases out the issues of should we aim to be "right" (as in correct) - which we should, but also if we have a difference of opinion with others or other groups on the left, should we have a "split" or disregard their past opinions also? And then, if it turns out the that other person/group on the left was correct in their analysis and action(s), should we be bitter that we weren't or should we be thankful that those who were right won out?

I'm posting the article in full, with a link to the article on Albert's blog. ... read full story / add a comment

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass at an accelerating pace, according to a new NASA-funded satellite study. The findings of the study -- the longest to date of changes in polar ice sheet mass -- suggest these ice sheets are overtaking ice loss from Earth's mountain glaciers and ice caps to become the dominant contributor to global sea level rise, much sooner than model forecasts have predicted. ... read full story / add a comment

An open letter appeared on the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance founded and run by Judith McGeary to save family farms in the US. The letter, written by Don Huber, professor emeritus at Purdue University, to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, warns of a pathogen “new to science” discovered by “a team of senior plant and animal scientists”. Huber says it should be treated as an “emergency’’, as it could result in “a collapse of US soy and corn export markets and significant disruption of domestic food and feed supplies.”
This could be the worst nightmare of genetic engineering that some scientists have been warning for years:
the unintended creation of new pathogens through assisted horizontal gene transfer and recombination. ... read full story / add a comment

Moshé Machover writes on the Wikileaks revalations, the emerging Arab revolutions and his fears that Israel could launch an attack on Iran. Full article at link.

For nearly 50 years I have been talking and writing about the prospect of an Arab revolution and only last year I said that, while I am confident this is going to happen, “don’t hold your breath”. What has been taking place has been a nice dress rehearsal, but we can see that the Arab revolution is not such a distant prospect. It is difficult to exaggerate its significance - not only for the region, but also for the whole world and for human history.

It is against this background that I would like to discuss the Wikileaks revelations. One whole section of Wikileaks has to do with the Middle East, and specifically with Israel and Iran ... read full story / add a comment

Today, in an even more meaningless exercise then normal, a minority of the population of Ireland will choose between two almost identical options as to who will implement the ECB / IMF austerity plans for southern Ireland. Outside of this plan the wealthiest 1% will continue to set economic policy tomorrow as they did yesterday and have throughout the last decades. The electoral circus we are now going through provides the rest of us with the illusion of control even though deep down almost everyone acknowledges the ritual as having no real impact on what policies are actually implemented. ... read full story / add a comment
