(Henry McDonald is Ireland Correspondent for the Guardian newspaper) Having worked as a journalist and film maker for BBC Northern Ireland’s investigative programme Spotlight in the late 1980s through to 1994, and having also written a book about collusion between the British intelligence services and loyalist paramilitaries, I have had occasion to read a good many books about the most recent round of the Irish Troubles. Even the poorest of these books has had some redeeming quality, some insight, which for me, as an informed reader, provided a new understanding of some aspect of the Troubles. I regret to say that Henry McDonald’s latest book has no such redeeming feature. ... read full story / add a comment

Writer/Filmmaker based in Dublin seeks to interview individuals who have been indirectly or directly affected by aggravated assault or street crime. According to Garda figures there were 3800 incidents of this nature last year in Dublin alone. The aim of this project is to more fully understand the residual effects of post traumatic stress arising from unwarranted assault. In doing so it is hoped to investigate the healing process and resilience of the victim through shared experience. Interviews will be carried out with absolute discretion to the sensitivity of the subject and at the convenience of those willing to take part. ... read full story / add a comment

RTE Radio 1 had both Richard Boyd Barrett (People Before Profit) and Eamonn McCann (journalist and broadcaster) as contributors on the Spirit Moves programme with Myles Dungan on March 29th. Neither Boyd Barrett nor McCann declared their membership of the SWP (no surprise there). However the most disgraceful aspect of their contribution was the opening comments by Boyd Barrett who attacked the recent Lyndsey strike in Britain as 'racist' . ... read full story / add a comment

Barack Obama’s Newroz message, which is supposed to represent a “new beginning” for relations between the US and the Islamic Republic has been greeted in many quarters. But we should more closely examine Obama's project in the Middle East and what he he wants to gain from Iran. This is no new beginning. The speech is just a continuation of the gunpoint diplomacy initiated by Dubya and continued by Obama. Bush himself gave out numerous messages of a similar nature during his presidency. The only difference is that Obama actually addresses the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic directly. ... read full story / add a comment

A mother who has been put through hell both here in Ireland and in Nigeria - doesn't it show what little difference there is with regard to basic human decency between the Irish and Nigerian authorities, the same persecution of the defenceless - such indifference, such arrogance, such fear, such selfishness, such inhumanity towards a mother and her two young children who just want a basic freedom to live in peace.

By lifelong republican Mickey Collins There should not be a British Army barracks in Antrim, no more than there should be one in Ardee or Athlone. The question for Irish Republicans is how do we get rid of them? Most times in our history when Irish people exercised their legitimate right to engage in armed struggle against the British, it ended in glorious defeat. Only twice did Republicans get an honourable draw. ... read full story / add a comment

In this case the source of the $1m 'award', is a transparently Zionist propaganda "foundation". Not that most would be aware of this outside minority publications and the internet, as analysis is unsurprisingly absent from mainstream media outlets. So in that light, it is published here in the public interest (originally from The Phoenix of 13th of March) Israeli Blood Money For Blair Tony Blair's $1m award for “exceptional leadership” from the Israel Dan David Foundation has received surprisingly little international attention. The PR guff surrounding this reward for Blair’s shameless support for virtually anything Israel inflicts on the Palestinians makes much of Blair’s peace initiative in Ireland and Kosovo. But the reality is that Blair is being rewarded for his long time support for Israel. ... read full story / add a comment

A call for Internment Eoghan Harris worked himself into a ball as he bounced up and down in Seanad Eireann the other night. The reason for this noisy outburst was the killing of two British soldiers and one member of the P.S.N.I. last weekend. Before he actually said the word Internment, he led the listeners up this point by repeatedly referring to Internment as ‘The I word‘. In Ireland, the word Internment evokes painful memories in generations of Irish people North and South of the border. The very mention of the word Internment carries an absolute loathing with it. Certain negative words can have this effect on people because of the fearful emotions associated with it. ... read full story / add a comment
