Nour Odeh writes about the funerals of four Palestinian teenagers who were murdered by the Israeli "Defence" Forces. Full story at url below.

Reporting on the death of children is never an easy task. It challenges your sense of professionalism and puts you face to face with the strongest of emotions; a mother’s inconsolable grief at the loss of her child.

On Sunday, I went through this unforgettable experience - four times. ... read full story / add a comment

Gallipoli cost us more than soldiers

Irish Examiner 23 march 2010

As President Mary McAleese prepares to commemorate the Irish who died during the brutal Gallipoli campaign, Dr Patrick Walsh says it is time to reflect on the full significance of this terrible and costly battle

PRESIDENT Mary McAleese will deliver a speech tomorrow at the site of the famous 1915 Battle of Gallipoli at which nearly 4,000 Irishmen were killed.

She will speak of Irish nationalists and unionists who fought and died side by side in a campaign which left over 150,000 allied service men and an estimated 80,000 of the Ottoman force dead.

But while commemorating all those brave men, how many will realise or question the cause for which they fought or the consequences at the time for Ireland itself? ... read full story / add a comment

Paulette Schroeder writes about an Israeli tactic of kidnapping Palestinian children and falsely charging them with crimes. These children are then convicted and imprisoned by the Israeli kageroo courts. Full text at link.

I am most concerned these recent weeks in Hebron. Young teens and even smaller children are disappearing from our neighbourhood in the Old City of Hebron. It's not by kidnapping. It's not by trafficking. It's not an unknown person with a criminal record perpetrating the crimes. Rather, the Israeli military is again pressing its boots down harder on the heads of the Palestinian people. If restrictions on travel and commerce, land confiscations, home invasions, and forced business closures have not succeeded in convincing Palestinian families to leave their land, then MAYBE taking their children will. ... read full story / add a comment

The fascist English Defence League (EDL) suffered a defeat in Bolton yesterday as plans for another demonstration intended to whip up racism in the local community and terrorise the town in the name of ‘anti-Islamic extremism’ were thwarted. In past demonstrations in Luton, Leeds and Stoke, the EDL have been able to terrorise black and Asian communities and gay districts. In Bolton the brave determination of anti-fascists protestors meant the EDL weren’t able to riot again, in the face of extreme police brutality.

Hi,

It was brought to our attention that 'Lara Boutique' was recently shown on an episode of TV3's 'Xpose'.

In the episode, real fur was casually shown and promoted - and the presenter, Glenda Gilson, even joked that "animal rights people wouldn't be happy".

I dropped into 'Lara Boutique' today to discuss a possible fur-free policy, but the manager was unwilling to talk about it, and was quite uptight and rude.

The shop doesn't currently have any real fur items, but this will not be a permanent status. I will be monitoring the situation, and will organise protests if I see any real fur in the shop.

Please contact them now, politely asking that they adopt a fur-free policy. It would also be beneficial to visit the shop to peacefully make a complaint in person. ... read full story / add a comment

David Morbeg writes on the growth in Workers Struggle in Iran. How Independent Unions are once again being formed after decades of suppression first under the Shah then under the Theocracy. Full text at url below.

Iranian advocates of democracy have taken to the streets regularly since the fraudulent re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, promoting a “green revolution” against the heavy-handed, repressive theocracy that rules the country. But there’s another wave of protests that, if linked to the green movement, could greatly strengthen the opposition and give it a more pronounced social-democratic character.

Late last week, for example, workers from the Shiraz Iran Telecommunications Industries blocked highways and sat in the provincial governor’s mansion for three days to protest 13 months of unpaid wages. A few weeks earlier, workers at the Mobarake steel complex in Isfahan staged hunger strikes on two days over pay and pension cuts. ... read full story / add a comment
