The Guardian published an article yesterday on how the Japanese have evaded through military technology the Sea Shepherd patrols that previously prevented them whaling and that they are now killing whales inside the internationally recognized Southern Ocean whaling sanctuary, that surrounds Antarctica. A fleet of Japanese ships is currently hunting minke whales in the Southern Ocean. It is a politically incendiary practice: the waters around Antarctica were long ago declared a whale sanctuary, but the designation has not halted Japan’s whalers, who are continuing a tradition of catching whales “for scientific research” in the region. In the past, conservation groups such as Sea Shepherd have mounted campaigns of harassment and successfully blocked Japan’s ships from killing whales. But not this year. Despite previous successes, Sea Shepherd says it can no longer frustrate Japan’s whalers because their boats now carry hardware supplied from military sources, making the fleet highly elusive and almost impossible to track. As a result the whalers are – for the first time – being given a free run to kill minke in the Southern Ocean. ... read full story / add a comment

Dear Sir/Madam, While we are relieved that Bord na gCon was denied permission to export Irish greyhounds to China, we remain alarmed that they are nevertheless going to attempt to develop and manage racetracks there. This is not just a cynical move, but a sinister one. They will have to get greyhounds from somewhere for this cruel sport. ... read full story / add a comment

The past World Week for the Abolition of Meat from 22 to 29 January 2011 - the very first WWAM of the year - was a success. Varied events (such as street actions, silent demonstrations, "human" meat tray actions, protest marches...) were organized in over 70 towns and cities, mainly in Europe, but also in South Africa, in both Americas, in India as well as in Japan (here's the list). These events were largely covered in the media. ... read full story / add a comment

Hi, It was brought to our attention that 'Lara Boutique' was recently shown on an episode of TV3's 'Xpose'. In the episode, real fur was casually shown and promoted - and the presenter, Glenda Gilson, even joked that "animal rights people wouldn't be happy". I dropped into 'Lara Boutique' today to discuss a possible fur-free policy, but the manager was unwilling to talk about it, and was quite uptight and rude. The shop doesn't currently have any real fur items, but this will not be a permanent status. I will be monitoring the situation, and will organise protests if I see any real fur in the shop. Please contact them now, politely asking that they adopt a fur-free policy. It would also be beneficial to visit the shop to peacefully make a complaint in person. ... read full story / add a comment

A US based philosophy worker has it appears teamed up with the tech industry and media complex this week to suggest "Yes". Other people think the technologically feasible (if near perfecting technique) of altering DNA and brains of animals might not constitute a humane use of science. Nobody is wondering if pain free animals are feasible how long do we have to wait for pain free soldiers or on the more optimistic side of this knowledge economy debate pain free children, who would save a fortune on first aid, emotional support & no doubt a career in sport. science is fiction until it is fact..... or is it? ... read full story / add a comment

The cops who as usual took the side of the Hunt went a tad too far this time and have ended up coughing up a tidy sum to rhe Hunt Sabs. This will help in future anti Hunt activities. In the Northwest United States, on the Columbia river, a war is being waged against Nature. Humans are at war with the fish, with the sea lions, and with the river itself. As fishing industry is killing off tens of thousands of endangered salmon, and the Bonneville dam is killing of tens of thousands more, wildlife "managers" are executing sea lions as scapegoats so that they can raise fishing quotas yet again, for the third year in a row, on the endangered salmon. The sea lions are supposed to be congressionally protected, but wildlife "managers" claim that they must kill off predators in order to leave more fish for fishermen to kill in their nets. PLEASE HELP US to stop this. ... read full story / add a comment

Veteran rights campaigner Peter Tatchell makes an impassioned plea in today’s London Independent for the rights of the thousands of animals languishing under the voyeuristic gaze of the gawping squawking horde that visits London Zoo each day. Cutting through all the prison/ Zoo’s PR spin , Peter points out that its primary concern lies in satisfying the prurience of these cash-cow visitors , and not in animal conservation . ... read full story / add a comment

Guga , young gannet chicks, are considered a delicacy by the villagers from Ness, on the Isle of Lewis .About this time every year boatloads of men from Ness sail thirty miles to the uninhabited island of Sula Sgeir, where thousands of gannets spend the summer nesting on cliff faces , to hunt /murder the young guga. The animal rights group Advocates for Animals is trying to get the hunt banned in the European Court . The group’s campaign director Ross Minnet told the London Independent last Saturday "The brutal and totally unnecessary guga hunt belongs back in the dark ages and has no place in a modern, 21st-century Scotland. It belongs in the pages of history books.” ... read full story / add a comment
