This is a repost of an important article on the Irish Left Review website and goes into detail on the connection between the Water Charges and the upcoming Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is currently being concluded in secret by the EU and US. *** The water charges can and must be defeated by resistance and non-payment but water, as a human right, must also be secured as a publicly owned and controlled resource universally available. Remember, we had to fight water charges in the 1980’s and again in the 1990’s so let’s make this win a permanent one. ... read full story / add a comment

It seems the US has realised it can cynically exploit the current Ebola crisis to further increase it's military presence in Africa. Speaking at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia Tuesday afternoon, President Barack Obama declared: “Faced with this outbreak, the world is looking to the United States and it is a responsibility we are prepared to embrace. We are prepared to take leadership on this.” This is, of course a load of horseshit. It's just an excuse to bolster US military forces in a resource rich region. ... read full story / add a comment

The Ukrainian parliament has approved laws on special status for the Donetsk and Lugansk Regions, as well as amnesty for those participating in the hostilities. The special status law has received 277 ‘yes’ votes from a total of 450 MPs, while the amnesty law was approved by 287 parliamentary members. The session of the Verkhovna Rada is underway during which MPs are to ratify an agreement with the EU. The law on the special status of Lugansk and Donetsk Regions guarantees the right to use and study Russian or any other language in Ukraine. It also states that local elections are to take place in the regions on December 7 ... read full story / add a comment

The tragedy of September 11, 2001, goes far beyond the deaths of those who died in the towers and the deaths of firefighters and first responders who succumbed to illnesses caused by inhalation of toxic dust. For thirteen years a new generation of Americans has been born into the 9/11 myth that has been used to create the American warfare/police state. The corrupt Bush and Obama regimes used 9/11 to kill, maim, dispossess and displace millions of Muslims in seven countries, none of whom had anything whatsoever to do with 9/11. ... read full story / add a comment

international / racism & migration related issues Wednesday August 27, 2014 - 19:14 by Bobby
Since August 25th, 2014, after reports in the mainstream media that the migration office rejected the applications for asylum of 108 refugees, there have been preparations for the eviction of these refugees, who occupied the Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg in the past (and were evicted in early April 2014) but later signed contracts with the Senate of Berlin, which promised them among others places to stay for at least six months and a single case examination of each of their asylum applications. It is known that parts of the agreements mentioned in the contract have been broken already in the beginning, e.g. that some refugees got their applications rejected without the promised single case examination and have been threatened with deportation already before the six months’ period was over. So yesterday the Senate sent officials to the respective refugees to inform them about the rejection of their applications and to order them to immediately leave their homes ... read full story / add a comment

The Mayo Advertiser carried an article on fracking on Aug 22nd. See below. Mayo needs to wake up to the reality that the controversial method of extracting natural gas from rock — known as fracking — could soon become a major issue in the county. That is according to two local Sinn Féin representatives who this week urged the public and political representatives to call on the Government to make its position on fracking clear because a number of Mayo townlands in the Swinford and Charlestown areas have long been flagged as possible fracking sites. ... read full story / add a comment

Too often in these complex times we get just one side of geopolitical events. And a hugely oversimplified colouring book US version depicting who we are supposed to hate and who we are supposed to align with along with emotive reasons for doing so such as "humanitarian aid" or "bringing democracy" or "preventing a massacre by an evil regime" or "weapons of mass destruction" etc etc. A captive media carries this simplistic and cynical message into every home until we are repeating it to each other in the pubs, during coffee breaks at work and on internet chat fora, twitter and facebook. Rarely do we get to hear the alternative to this manufactured consent and cynical propaganda from the other side. So here it is, the truth behind what is going on in Ukraine from Russian adviser to Putin, Sergei Glaziev ... read full story / add a comment

The WSM have produced an article that puts in context the way the Palestinian land has been stolen from them by the Israeli state. For the size of its population Ireland has seen very large Gaza solidarity demonstrations. It is also one of the few places in the world outside the USA where there has been public displays of support for the Israeli military assault. Internationally there are many variations of this map where activists present to their population what the expulsion of the Palestinians from much of the land they once occupied would look like in a local context. One of our members prepared this but we soon realised its an impossible image to post without some reflection on our own settler colonialist past. ... read full story / add a comment

The Intercept -the website setup by Glenn Greenwald and others this week publishes a new summary of intercept capabilities used by the NSA and Britain's GCHQ, this time covering how the intelligence agencies working on behalf of the surveillance state disrupt public discourse on the Internet and seek to control the Internet. The revelations cover a range of surveillance tools that are used to spy and collect information and as well as to disrupt individuals computers and to attack websites using the very same tools that the same state has imprisoned hackers for. ... read full story / add a comment |
