Morgan Kelly, Professor of Economics at UCD has delivered a scathing criticism of Cowen's decision to rescue Anglo Irish Bank - and describes how Cowen and Lenihan went against advice of the Central Bank and their own experts in the Department of Finance - fully aware of what it would do to the citizens of the state. The reality is that Anglo has no importance in the Irish financial system. It existed purely as a vehicle for a few politically connected individuals to place reckless bets on the commercial property market. These property speculators may be of systemic importance to the finances of Fianna Fáil, but their significance ends there. ... read full story / add a comment

In a powerful Counterpunch article, human rights activist, Caoimhe Butterly, working in Jabaliya and Gaza City as a volunteer with ambulance services and as co-coordinator for the Free Gaza Movement vividly describes the abattoir and war crime scene that is now Gaza: The bodies in their blood-soaked white shrouds cover the entire floor space of the Shifa hospital morgue. Some are intact, most horribly deformed, limbs twisted into unnatural positions, chest cavities exposed, heads blown off, skulls crushed in. ... read full story / add a comment
dublin / anti-war / imperialism Monday January 19, 2009 - 11:35 by John Mearsheimer
John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, co-author of the paper (available online) and subsequent book (with Stephen Walt) _The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy_, presents a concise timeline description and absolutely the clearest account of the true reason behind Israel's wanton atrocities in Gaza. Mearsheimer argues that diminishing Hamas or stopping their rockets are subsidiary goals for Israel, to Israel's more central goal of controlling all of historical Palestine via an "Iron Wall" policy that would permanently subjugate the Palestinian people Mearsheimer points out that this goal cannot be achieved, and certainly not by the brutal method of a total war on the Palestinian people. The likely outcome even in the case of relative Israeli success is a permanent Apartheid, which itself will [thankfully] doom Israel as a chauvinistically and exclusionary "Jewish State" [and its racist state ideology of Zionism]. ... read full story / add a comment

On January 11, an estimated 10,000 people rallied in front of the Israeli consulate in midtown New York in support of Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip. The rally, which was organized by UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York in cooperation with the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, featured speeches by New York’s most senior lawmakers. While the crowd was riled to righteous anger by speeches about Hamas evildoers, the event was a festive affair that began and ended with singing and joyous dancing. "But this is only the tip of the ice berg. The Israeli forces have begun to use civilians as human shields. According to Amnesty International Israeli forces occupy civilian houses and keep the civilians as hostages on the first floor, while they position their soldiers on the second floor; ensuring that any fire on the house (especially with anti-tank or RPG missiles) kills the civilians as well." ... read full story / add a comment

This interview was held the day after Israel broke the ceasefire though it was as yet unclear what the reports from Gaza on the 5th November would lead to. It has been edited to include a response from RD to the latest round of violence against the Palestinians and sad to say it seems the media are incapable of reflecting accurately on the causes and ongoing atrocities inflicted on Palestinians by Israel. The taboo about criticising Israel is still largely intact. ... read full story / add a comment

A massive cache of weaponry is on its way to Israel - via the Greek port of Astakos. Efforts are being made internationally to stop the shipment at the port. The report below will hopefully be up on Indymedia Athens soon, but if anybody has any contacts in Greece please ask them to do what they can to alert people and organise some effective but peaceful attempt to stop this shipment - which may well be used to kill more Palestinainas and possibly to assist in a further assault on Lebanon. It set sail from Cyprus today. Report below. Word of this mission needs to be spread around the world and its progress monitored very carefully. These people are really vulnerable. Given what we have just witnessed in Gaza we know Israel is capable of violent defiance of world opinion, of law and of even basic humanitarian considerations and that it thinks nothing of murdering innocent people intent only on providing humanitarian aid. John Ging of UNWRA has reported how he had to withdraw UN aid workers because they were being deliberately, and repeatedly targetted by the very IDF units they had negotiated with for safe passage into Gaza to help relieve suffering. He called a halt to the effort when the IDF murdered one of them and has given explicit interviews with Al Jazeera English since. Let's hope this boat doesnt suffer the same fate. ... read full story / add a comment |
