Last night in Dublin former US president Bill Clinton told an invited gathering of 575 of the richest 1% of Ireland's population that they were the greatest problem facing the world. What jumps out at me about the recent report by PNA (Psychiatric Nurses Association) to the Minister of Health is that it underlines a definite antagonism between providers and patients in the mental health services. It conveys graphically and in a rather stock way a strong underlying sense of fear and loathing of mental patients. Undoubtedly relations between patients and nurses can assume knife-edge proportions at times. And it is, as we all know from human experience, at times of heightened tension or drama that basic and fundamental motivation emerges clearly in the spotlight. I believe Mr. Kavanagh (general secretary of PNA) when he says nurses in their hundreds have been injured by patients. The true-blue Tories are having to *save* 61 BILLION between now and 2014 !!! Interestingly they are cutting non-protected spends such as the NHS. At last Wakefield has been exposed as the crook that he is. He spread scare stories about the MNR Vaccine knowing that his claims were false. The doctor who sparked a worldwide panic over the MMR vaccine could be struck off after being found guilty yesterday of a series of misconduct charges related to his “unethical” research. Andrew Wakefield, who in 1998 claimed an unfounded link between the vaccination and autism, “showed a callous disregard” for the suffering of children, subjecting them to unnecessary, invasive tests, a hearing found. The General Medical Council (GMC) ruled that he abused his position of trust as he researched a possible link between the MMR vaccine, bowel disease and autism in children. It found that Wakefield and two colleagues acted dishonestly and irresponsibly in carrying out research on children against their best interests and without official permission. ... read full story / add a comment

Last week a consortium of three companies bought a Sellafield site with a view to a 2016 expansion of UK nuclear energy provision, this emanates from the *Entente Formidable* fiscal deal between the Heir to Slitherin' Gordon Brown (pal of Alistair Campbell , currently being investigated for Provence parties and expenses and best matey of Toxic Blair, who really had to go and is not getting Europe BTW) and the Gallic Shrimp Premier Sarkozy. A short article in the Irish edition of the Daily Mirror points out the absurdity of the country making cutbacks in public services while sitting on billions of euro worth of natural resources, and happily handing them over to the most profitable companies in the world. A quick quote at the end makes clear that Fine Gael see nothing wrong with the present system, seeing the giveaway of 100 per cent of what is found as an "incentive". Presumably if Simon Coveney had gold buried in his garden, he would give it all away to anyone who was prepared to help him dig for it, keeping none for himself... Lidl appears to have 'lowered the bar' by urging shoppers to 'don't spend your cash on trash' by shopping in Tesco. Just as the British ministry of Defence admit they're on the long list of Western military offices hacked by the People's Republic of China - & gun-ho patriots demand surgical strikes on China, the esteemed advocator of family & caucasian values of beauty and healthy living which is the Mattel Toy Corporations announce their 3rd product recall this year. Less than 150 years ago, a female kid was happy to play with a bit of sackcloth stuffed with straw or a male kid was encouraged to tie a bit of pig gut to a forked stick. Posh kids (of the male variety) were offered lead soldiers to re-enact regimental glories at Waterloo and posh kids (of the child girl variety) were offered endless coloured ribons of the Laura Ingles "little house on the prarie" type.
