A recently published study of long term health problems in the population of the town of Fallujah in Iraq, which underwent heavy bombardment by US forces in 2004, reveal uncanny similarities with the horrors experienced in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the years following the atom bombings. However, in Fallujah, the current rates of occurance for cancers, birth defects and other abnormalities are higher than those experienced in the two Japanese cities in the wake of the A-bombs. ... read full story / add a comment

The ban on the wearing of the burqa is wrong. Just as it it is wrong to force women to wear the veil. The French Left have been found wanting. Full story at link. The fact that only one French MP - a member of the rightwing UMP - voted against the ban on the burqa says it all. On July 13, the bill prohibiting the “covering of the face in public” received the votes of 335 deputies. The bill does not specify Muslims or women, but everyone knows who the targets are - the less than 2,000 women in France who normally dress in the full-length burqa or niqab. After the law comes into force next year - it has yet to pass through the senate and may face a challenge in the constitutional court - those who continue to cover up will face a €150 fine and/or compulsory citizenship classes. Those who “force” a person to wear such attire could be looking at a €30,000 fine and a one-year jail sentence (the penalties will be even stiffer if a minor is made to cover their face). ... read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather writes on how the US is stepping up Sanctions against Iran in its attempts to impose Regime Change From Above and on the paraalysing effect thgis is having on the Regime. She also comments on problems among the opposition forces. Full text at url. New sanctions imposed by the United States government last week were the most significant hostile moves against Iran’s Islamic Republic since 1979. They marked a period of unprecedented coordination led by the US to obtain the support of the United Nations and European Union. After months of denying their significance, the government of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was forced to react by setting up an emergency counter-sanctions unit, whilst Iranian aviation officials accused the UK, Germany and the United Arab Emirates of refusing to supply fuel for civilian Iranian airplanes. As it turned out, this was not true. However, the EU banned most of Iran Air’s jets from flying over its territory, because of safety concerns directly related to previous sanctions. It is said that most of the national airline’s fleet, including Boeing 727s and 747s and its Airbus A320s, are unsafe because the company has not been able to replace faulty components. ... read full story / add a comment

Right-wing think tanks that deny climate change is even happening are advocating climate engineering to fix it. Don't listen to them. Full text of article by Clive Hamilton at link. IN 1892 Edvard Munch witnessed a blood-red sunset over Oslo, Norway. Shaken by it, he wrote in his diary that he felt "a great, unending scream piercing through nature". The incident inspired him to create his most famous painting, The Scream. The striking sunset was probably caused by the eruption of Krakatoa, which sent a massive plume of ash and gas into the upper atmosphere, turning sunsets red around the globe and cooling the Earth by more than a degree. Now a powerful group of scientists, venture capitalists and conservative think tanks is coalescing around the idea of reproducing this cooling effect by injecting sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere to counter climate change. Despite the enormity of what is being proposed - nothing less than seizing control of the climate - the public has been almost entirely excluded from the planning. ... read full story / add a comment

Palestinian homes are bulldozed in Occupied Al Quds but the Zionists continue build homes for the colonists. Full story at link. Israeli bulldozers destroyed at least three Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem today, breaking an unofficial moratorium on house demolitions since the end of 2009. At least one of the homes was occupied by a family of seven, who removed their belongings shortly before the building was razed. Bill Henderson writes about those who deny climate change and he also touchs on some other hot topics. There are people who deny that climate change is happening, that it is caused by increasing greenhouse gases (GHG) from burning fossil fuels, or that it is potentially so serious as to be civilization even humanity threatening. There are worldview and monetary reasons for such denial, but since 97 percent to 98 percent of the climate researchers most actively publishing in the field support the tenet that combustion of fossil fuels is the source of global climate change their denial costs valuable time now but is ultimately untenable. ... read full story / add a comment

Yet another report has cleared scientists at the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of dishonesty in the presentation of data on global warming. However it has stated that: “We do find that there has been a consistent pattern of failing to display the proper degree of openness, both on the part of CRU scientists and on the part of the UEA.” But the inquiry found that the scientists “honesty and rigour” were “not in doubt” and there was “no evidence” of behaviour that would undermine assessments by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). ... read full story / add a comment

In 1990, America’s President George H. W. Bush awarded William C. Rogers III, the Legion of Merit for his service as a commanding officer in the US navy. Two years previously Rogers had been the commander of the USS Vincennes when the warship shot down an Iranian civilian aircraft over the Persian Gulf killing all 290 people aboard . On the twenty-second anniversary of the atrocity last Saturday, relatives of the victims sailed to the spot where Iran Air A300 Airbus came down. In a message read out at the ceremony, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked : "In which culture ... can that Legion of Merit be awarded to the criminal USS Vincennes commander." ... read full story / add a comment

Abu Daoud is dead but his memory lives on in the struggle for a free Palestine. The mastermind behind the 1972 Munich Olympics attacjk in which 11 Israeli athletes (who were IDF Reservists) were killed, has died, his daughter and Palestinian officials say. Mohammed Oudeh died of kidney failure a day after he was taken to hospital in Syria, his daughter said. He was 73. Oudeh - also known under his guerrilla name Abu Daoud - did not directly take part in the attack. He later said he had no regrets because he considered the athletes, as military reservists, to be legitimate targets. ... read full story / add a comment
