Paul Roberts writes on the continuing campaign of Ethnic Cleansing carried out against the Palestinian People. Not just by the state of Israel: Zionists Planters are alloed to carry out attacks on Palestinians and to destroy their property with impunity. Full text at link.

“Settlers attack West Bank mosque and burn holy Muslim books” was a London Times headline on December 11, 2009.

These attacks, together with the demolition of Palestinian homes, the uprooting of Palestinians’ olive groves, the innumerable checkpoints that prevent Palestinians from accessing schools, work, and medical care, the Israeli Wall that denies Palestinians access to the land stolen from them, and the isolation and blockade of the Gaza Ghetto, are part of the Israeli government’s policy of genocide for the Palestinians. ... read full story / add a comment

Here are extracts from a report by Amnesty International which documents the outrages carried out by Iranian militia and police. Vids and the full text is at the link.

Human rights violations in Iran are now as bad as at any time in the past 20 years, Amnesty International has said in a new report on the aftermath of last June’s presidential election.

"The Iranian leadership must ensure that the many allegations of torture, including rape, unlawful killings and other abuses are fully and independently investigated," said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Programme.

"As Bill Clinton and Madame Albright liked to say – the United Nations is there to further the best interests – of US foreign policy. However, to be fair, other States undoubtedly see it much the same way, but are more discrete and lack ambitions and military capacity for global empire!
And now we have President Obama, who wants to work with the United Nations and be a player rather than to dominate and control. Sounds good. We await the reality as he expands the war in Afghanistan, keeps Bagram airbase prison full of the tortured and uncharged, finishes off the destruction of Iraq, refuses to end the occupation of Okinawa, has the thick skin to criticize China for human rights abuses when America itself has a deplorable record, and now militarily threatens Iran! Not exactly the sort of new player we had hoped for perhaps! But let’s keep our fingers crossed..." ... read full story / add a comment

Green Party TD Paul Gogarty's approach to politics is unconventional at the best of times.

Readers will remember he recently attracted attention by rolling around the floor and playing dead while a political rival was making a speech at a public meeting. But in the Dáil on Friday December 11th, he used what they call un-parliamentary language to make his feelings known. Video may be unsuitable for children.

Pat Kenny's radio show has long been a platform for the most kookiest of deniers, and it is quite clear where his own views are on the subject. In fact, the only thing that appears to get him more, eh, heated, is somebody with the temerity to mention the use of progressive taxation! Particularly when as an alternative out of the current economic crisis...

So, I thought he'd yet again play it somewhat cagey (as in hiding his bias against the overwhelming consensus) but clearly give Plimer an easy time of it, however, Kenny just let the mask slip very, very visibly. The 'debate' would be Kenny & Plimer vs Gibbons and 99.9% of the peer-reviewed science. Kenny treated Plimer with kid gloves and then called Gibbons an “apostle” for climate change.

After a lenghty wait, the DPP has finally recieved the report over the Terence Wheelock custody death from the Garda Ombudsman. The Wheelock family have been critical of the inordinate amount of time it has taken the ombudsman to finish the investigation, as the bulk of inquiries had already been finished late last year and have stated again that this case will go all the way to the European Court of Human Rights..

A court has upheld the right of a private citizen to film gardaí. A judge found the person filming to acting lawfully and within his rights, and fined the two members of the Garda Siochána who assaulted him to prevent him filming to have acted illegally. They were given small fines, even though they pleaded not guilty and lied to the court about the nature of the assault.

There is no law against filming anyone in a public place in Ireland, and that includes the police. If they don't want to be caught on camera doing something, then they shouldn't be doing it.

Lastly, can you imagine what the sentence would be for a protester who grabbed a garda and assaulted him to stop him filming? ... read full story / add a comment

Chris Strafford reports on the 2009 HOPI Britain AGM. There is also a link to MIke McNairs keynote address to the conference. Vids will hopefully be available at a later stage.

Hopi has always called for the building of strong links between the democratic and revolutionary movements in Iran, whilst others in the movement - the British Socialist Workers Party, George Galloway - previously attacked us for ‘trying to dictate to the movement in Iran’. Some had even accused us of playing into the hands of imperialism for daring to criticise the theocratic regime. The SWP leadership realised the way the wind was blowing and made a U-turn, coming out in favour of the millions of protestors who marched through the streets of Tehran and other cities (although SWP comrades on the leadership of the Stop the War Coalition continue to oppose Hopi’s affiliation). Galloway, however, has simply made himself look idiotic by defending not only the rigged elections and the subsequent repression, but also the Islamic republic itself. ... read full story / add a comment

Houzan Mahmoud of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq, speaks of how the Imperialist invasion and occupation of Iraq has affected women, forcing many into sexual-slavery. Along with Nadya Khalife of HRW Houzan was interviewed by Rachelle Kliger of The Media Line. Full text at link.

Houzan said that since 2003 more than 70% of Iraqis have lost their jobs, a situation compounded by a lack of welfare provisions.

“We have more than four million widows in Iraq… who will provide for these women? The situation created absolute poverty, particularly for women, and these women have virtually no other option but to turn to prostitution. There’s nothing called choice in this,” she stressed. “They are either being forced into it because of the economic and political situation or because of a lack of security, whereby women and young girls are being kidnapped.” ... read full story / add a comment
