Not all of the Syrian Opposition Groups wish to impose an Islamist Dictatorship by force of arms. There are long time dissidents who wish to achieve peaceful change, they have opposed the armed actions of the Islamists from the outset. The holding of the conference was facilitated through talks between the Russian and Syrian Foreign Ministers. Full text at link.

Syria opposition members are holding a meeting in the capital Damascus to debate peaceful ways out of the long-lasting bloody conflict. The Free Syrian Army (FSA) is boycotting the forum. Journalist Neil Clark in an interview with RT speaks about how the US grip on the Arab world is crumbling. The US is reaping what it sowed when it overthrew Gaddfi. Full text and vid at link.

RT: What's your assessment of who's behind the worst of this violence – does it seem heavily-orchestrated to you?

Neil Clark: It does, actually. Remember the old saying, ‘You reap what you sow?’ The US is really reaping what it’s sowed. Let’s think back to February 2011. The US took part with NATO in the attack on Gaddafi’s Libya, bringing death and destruction. And they’ve created this violent situation. So while of course we condemn the attacks on the US consulate and the murder of Chris Stevens, we’ve got to put this in wider context. And this wouldn’t have happened had NATO not intervened last year. ... read full story / add a comment

Give youth a chance: real and radical change needed

Mon, Aug 13, 2012

THE YOUNG people are at it again. They’re drinking, fighting, losing their religion, and causing havoc on the streets of Ireland. They have no respect, no manners, no get up and go. They’re mollycoddled, dossing on the dole, sunning themselves in Australia and only interested in sex, fun, Facebook and their phones. You’d think that Ireland’s young people were the scourge of the nation.

Sadly that’s a common view shared by many and something that urgently needs to change. Yesterday was International Youth Day and the theme this year is “building a better world, partnering with youth”, a proposal that is in great need of consideration here in Ireland.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov exposes the hypocrisy of Western nations in refusing to condemn terrorist bombings in Syria. Full text at link.

The Security Council has always resolved that terrorism is unacceptable, Lavrov said. But for the first time, Western member-states deviated from this position after a bombing in Damascus killed several senior security officials, he said. According to Western nations, the bombing did not qualify as terrorism since the victims were the heads of power structures fighting against insurgents, Lavrov said, claiming he was dumbfounded by such an explanation.

Lavrov urged other members of the Security Council to condemn not only the Sunday bombing in the conflict-wracked Syrian city of Aleppo, which killed 27 people and wounded dozens, “but also a series of terrorist attacks that happened the same day in Iraq.”

Its not just the WMD excuse that the Imperialists are using to advance their cause of War on Syria and the threat of war against Iran: the US et al are using the reactionary Sunni regimes and their co-thinkers throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Full text at link.

In citing “weapons of mass destruction” as a pretext for waging war against Syria, the Obama administration is treading a well-worn path. When President Barack Obama threatened August 21 that the movement of chemical weapons inside Syria was a “red line” that could trigger US military intervention, he did nothing that was not pioneered by George W. Bush before the 2003 war against Iraq. Obama now has the backing of British Prime Minister David Cameron and, this week, France’s François Hollande. The French president said his government was already working with Turkey to establish no-fly zones “in co-ordination with our closest partners.” ... read full story / add a comment

A SON of a war of independence veteran has accused a historian of publishing "untrue and unchecked claims" relating to a disputed IRA ambush in which his father participated 92 years ago.

Edward "Ned" Young was the last known survivor of the Kilmichael ambush, when the IRA killed 17 police auxiliaries on November 28, 1920. His son John Young has described as "palpably untrue" assertions made by Dr Eve Morrison about a phone conversation he had with her last month. Morrison's claims appear to contradict an affidavit Young signed five years ago, in which he denied that his father co-operated with a controversial book about the ambush. ... read full story / add a comment

BBC are up to their tricks again, censoring video which shows syrian rebels in a bad light, i.e. guilty of war crimes against geneva convention. This is not the first time they have monkeyed with reality of course. Back in May the BBC used a years-old photo of dead Iraqi children to depict victims of an alleged government assault in the town of Houla. Also in Libya remember the fake photos of a crowd of "Anti Gadaffi protesters", many of whom carried Indian flags. (photo was just an unrelated gathering in india). John Pilger writes on the latest British bluster about storming the Ecuadorian Embass in London to arrest Julian Asange and on the craven role played by the media. Pilger also reveals that: Four years ago, a barely noticed Pentagon document, leaked by WikiLeaks, described how WikiLeaks and Assange would be destroyed with a smear campaign leading to "criminal prosecution". Full text at link.

The British government's threat to invade the Ecuadorean embassy in London and seize Julian Assange is of historic significance. David Cameron, the former PR man to a television industry huckster and arms salesman to sheikdoms, is well placed to dishonour international conventions that have protected Britons in places of upheaval. Just as Tony Blair's invasion of Iraq led directly to the acts of terrorismin London on 7 July 2005, so Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague have compromised the safety of British representatives across the world. ... read full story / add a comment

The US have turned down a Syrian offer of negotiations. Meanwhile France has joined with the US in threats to impose a No Fly Zone within Syria. Full text at link.

Fighting is intensifying in Syria and throughout the Near East, as US and NATO officials escalate threats against Syria after US President Barack Obama’s statement Monday night that Washington is planning for a US invasion of Syria. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland dismissed Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil’s subsequent offer of talks, even though Jamil offered to discuss Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s resignation.

Jamil said that Assad’s resignation could be discussed during a “national dialogue,” as an external attempt to force a president’s ouster on the Syrian people would set a “very dangerous precedent.” It is hardly clear that the outcome of a “national dialogue” would be favorable to Washington, however, even assuming it could somehow be held in a country torn apart by a US proxy war. A January poll found 55 percent of Syrians support keeping Assad in office. ...

The Oslo District Court returned a verdict this week finding Anders Behring Breivik guilty of murder over the twin July 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway that led to 77 deaths . The Islamophobe killer was found to be sane at the time of the attacks and sentenced to twenty-one years in prison . Jordan Shilton argues in WSWS today that the political establishment’s attempt to portray the killer as an insane “lone wolf” was part of a cover-up that started on the day the fascist was arrested. ... read full story / add a comment

Al Qaeda, the US lead contractor in its proxy war in Syria is causing the war to spill over into Lebanon and Al Qaedas campaign in Iraq is intensifying. Full text at link.

The intensifying proxy war in Syria is causing increased anxiety throughout the Middle East, where the specters of sectarian war and Western military intervention loom large. A series of kidnappings threatens to drag Lebanon deeper into the 17-month-long civil war in neighboring Syria, while 93 people were killed in Iraq on Thursday.

Al Qaeda’s role as a partner in a US-led Sunni sectarian war against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is apparently strengthening its operations in Iraq. Some 190 people were killed by Al Qaeda attacks in Iraq over the last two-and-a-half weeks.

More evidence of Israeli plans for war against Iran. Full tyext at link.

A leaked memo that surfaced Wednesday provides a detailed blueprint for an unprovoked Israeli war against Iran. The publication of the memo coincides with multiple Israeli media reports indicating that such an attack may be imminent.

The memo was first published by US blogger and journalist Richard Silverstein and was subsequently picked up by the BBC and other media. Silverstein said that the document had been passed by a member of the Israel Defense Forces to a politician, and then on to him. He said it had been prepared for the eight-member Israeli Security Council as part of a bid by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to convince other members of the government to support an early and unilateral Israeli strike. ... read full story / add a comment
