A few years ago a comrade from Leeds introduced me to the life and times of this colourful figure, Dr John Creaghe who helped spread the flames of anarchism across three continents. In the words of the famous Italian anarchist Bartolomeo Vanzetti this pamphlet is dedicated to the ‘nameless in the vast crowd of nameless ones.’ ... read full story / add a comment

Referendums modify Irish foundational law and are, in effect, a court and citizens are the jury

This requires, in the interest of fair conduct, criteria such as the following are complied with as in the courts.
There must be
careful, truthful, balanced and clear exposition of the various aspects of the amendment
no preconditioning or intimidation of citizen jurors
adequate opportunity and time for all concerned citizens to evaluate the issues
adequate opportunities for citizen jurors to evaluate the credibility proponents of Yes & No cases etc

On the 21st of March, 1953 a cartoon appeared inthe "New Yorker" by the Scottish cartoonist Ale Graham which showed one UFO, one horse in a field, two extra-terrestials with the caption take me to your leader . The rest is history. In the list of possibly apocryphal quotations of Henry Kissenger (history has been rewritten since he started out) is included the question who do I call for Europe

It is quite mind numbingly appalling for me as an Irish migrant to Europe to read not bit of coverage of the Isbon Treaty which doesn't not include comment on who are the candidates to take the Big Job of Permanent President of the European Council ... read full story / add a comment

A little thought would enable most to see that ending competition (war or commercial warfare in which the strongest, wealthiest, most devious etc generally win) is the imperative if we want a just & peaceful world. Those of us who blame “the system"- capitalism, communism, socialism or religions of any persuasion have been misled. The system is what those in power make it regardless of what it's called. Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, or their ilk control, dominate, terrorise, kill, even their own as well as the enemy to achieve their ends. Gandhi, MLKing or Christ would never use such methods because they loved humanity even their "enemies"

By all accounts it appears that members of the Gardai were not truthful in their dealings throughout Michael McKevitt’s case. The latest conflicting evidence between two senior Garda officers certainly warrant an immediate investigation to identify if flawed evidence also contaminated the civil case in Belfast, resulting in a double miscarriage of justice.

DUBLIN, MONDAY, 07 SEPTEMBER 2009: In the Taxation Commission report published today we see another attack on the Artists Tax Exemption Scheme. Today the word "communism" is most often associated with the totalitarian one-party states of Soviet Russia or China. Nothing could be further from the anarchist goal of a stateless, free society. So the association of anarchism with communism seems, at first sight, perverse. ... read full story / add a comment

The McCarthy or “Bord Snip Nua” report on public spending outlined a range of proposed cuts in government expenditure. Of the €5.3b in possible savings, it can be safely said that at least €4b of this (and probably more) targets the working class. Indeed, a full third of the cuts are aimed at pensioners and unemployed. In the private sector, attacks on our class continue in the form of pay cuts, short time and lay-offs. ... read full story / add a comment

Introduction

Is the spectre of mass unemployment a permanent feature in post-boom Ireland? Ireland’s economic boom was predicated on a policy of low tax entry to the European free market as well as an unsustainable housing boom. The Irish state’s response to the global crisis seems to be deflationary policies in a ‘race to the bottom’ between peripheral and semi-peripheral economies. The weakness of indigenous Irish capitalism and the living costs in debt ridden Ireland do not leave much room for growth in private sector employment. The private sector has never been able to provide sustainable full employment in the history of the state. This article explores this thesis and maintains that workers should not depend on the private sector and its political servants to provide decent employment for all.

An excellent piece of investigative journalism from the German "Spiegel" magazine Martina Keller and Markus Grill has just been translated into English. It examines a US owned company which through its German subsidiary harvests human body parts (termed tissue) from dead Ukrainians. The illegal global trade in organ and tissue harvesting for so long associated in the public mind with the Chinese penal system and to a lesser extent the theft of organs from Indian peasants has not ended. Rather it has moved out of the gulags and slums into Wall Street trading on the cutting edge of medical treatment providers. The other side of Obama's health care, if you like. Inspired by the article (linked to in this text) I'd like to raise awareness about how the rich cheat the dead (if not death) & perhaps provoke thought amongst the agnostics, humanists, atheists amongst us about the moral value we place (if any) on dead bodies. ... read full story / add a comment

This Tuesday I rang Cape Cod Times journalist Karen Jefferies, who had done an article on my candidacy in the European elections with details regarding the investigations into the misapplication of 3000 of my first preference votes to Declan Ganley's quota. She told me that she had just returned from the Kennedy compound where Ted Kennedy looked to only have a couple of weeks left. It was with great sadness that I received the news the following day that indeed Ted Kennedy had passed away, so I decided to put together the details of my only dealings with the late Senator from Massachusetts.

The Anglo-American world order's media industrial complex has followed some key leaks to the "New York Times" in this August with shallow expressions of shock. It appears that Cheney authorised the CIA to outsource intelligence profiling with the purpose of arranging murder to a number of the usual suspect "private security consultancies". We've long known the name of one very prominent US company, Blackwater, and recently even in Ireland, we on the left, came to consider the activities of IRMS after on this site ample evidence was presented linking Michael Dwyer to both it and the same far-right Hungarian paramilitary group whose summer induction of new members was broken up last Saturday(*). But honestly, to understand our world today, be it the middle east, mid Asia or more to my point Latin America - it is essential we examine the "privatisation of war". ... read full story / add a comment
