The Seomra Spraoi collective refused DIBC permission to use their space citing two political reasons for the refusal. The DIBC wrote to Seomra protesting the refusal and, a month later without reply, posted the letter on Indymedia, where it generated some comment, including one from Mark in which he attacked the publicising of the issue and made a number of allegations against the DIBC. ... read full story / add a comment

The Transnational Chiquita company was actively involved and not for the first time in the overthrow of a Central American democratically elected Government . With its powerful allies in Washington the Obama Administration has not formally declared the ousting of President Zelaya as a Coup D'Etat which would require it under U.S. law to suspend all economic and military aid to the regime. ... read full story / add a comment

"We will set the standards for delivering health and social care services and we will continuously inspect to ensure that these standards are being met." "We will help deliver value for your money by monitoring that the resources in our health and social services are used in a way which delivers the best outcome for the patient or service user." The above lines taken from the front page of HIQA’s web site strike me as being rather gung-ho. It appears that HIQA is setting itself up like some martinet intent on squeezing performance out of unwilling minions. ... read full story / add a comment

On the 22nd and 23rd of July the Irish Times published two articles, by Northern Editor, Gerry Moriarty reporting from Israel where he spent the best part of a week with a group of other Irish journalists embedded at the invitation of the Israeli Ministry of foreign-affairs, politicians, charity workers, community activists, religious, business and medical people and ordinary civilians. Reading the articles his hosts must have been well pleased with their efforts to rehabilitate Israel’s tarnished image in the wake of its latest massacre in Gaza. Anyone familiar with Israel’s brutal subjugation of the Palestinian people would be forgiven for thinking that Mr. Moriarty must have enjoyed a little too much of his hosts hospitality before writing the articles. ... read full story / add a comment

People often ask Vegans- why is a vegetarian diet not sufficient if one wants to eliminate food that causes suffering to animals from their diet? Years ago Vegetarianism was a new concept but now it is mainstream. We have now progressed to a new level with Veganism as people embrace the concept in increasing numbers. The vast range of Soya and plant based products in Irish supermarkets accommodating diets free of animal products is increasing rapidly. ... read full story / add a comment

Jarvey's in Killarney have had recent success after a row with the National Park and Wildlife services over them refusing to get dung-catchers attached to their horses, which saw them being prevented from entering the park. Following a strike and picket which began on Tuesday morning the 14/07/2009, the Jarvey's received an interim injunction after a high court hearing on Friday last, which has suspended the wearing of the dung-catchers and has seen the Jarvey's returning to work as normal. ... read full story / add a comment

Bottom-up rights are those rights excluded from UN human rights instruments because they were considered incompatible with neo liberalism and globalization. This pits a 'we are all in this together' establishment against the independent peoples e.g. small business, and the most disadvantaged. The discontented need to struggle to have these rights, which entail an ethical globalization, included in domestic and international human rights law. ... read full story / add a comment

How low can they go? Well the lowest I've found is a cutback of €2.6 million in funding to local groups which are fighting against the ravages of drug addiction. Just what you would expect from a smug upper middle class toadie of the ruling class like Colm McCarthy. Colm McCarthy has declared War on the ordinary people of Ireland. In recent years climate change has loomed large in the public imagination. Scientifically, there is little doubt that it is a real threat to the future of human civilisation. The greenhouse effect has been known about since the early 19th century - gases in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour trap heat from the sun, causing the climate of the planet to heat up over time. Probably the most spectacular known example of this effect in action is on Venus. As recently as the 1960s it was thought that Venus might have a climate that could support life. However, in 1962, a US space probe measured its surface temperature at 425°C. Billions of years ago, it had a climate similar to that of earth today – but a runaway greenhouse effect turned it into a ball of fire. ... read full story / add a comment

Hands off People Of Iran sends solidarity greetings to protestors in Iran on 9th July. This day is the 10th anniversary of 18 Tir – when the Iranian state, under President Khatami violently put down a protest by students. The protest was initially against the suppression of a popular newspaper. Students were attacked in their university dormitories , as they were ransacked and set on fire by state forces. The reaction to the attack was overwhelming, with mass demonstrations taking place. The students became very radicalised and openly opposed the regime. Ayatollah Ali Khameneh’I ordered the movement to be crushed and President Khatami approved this decision. ... read full story / add a comment |
