St Patrick’s Day saw Galway Shell to Sea organise a city-wide day of action and outreach. Massive crowds flocked to the city for the culmination of the Galway St. Patrick’s week festival and parade. The all-Ireland Irish language marathon “Rith 2010” also finished in the city centre on the same day. Given all this, Galway S2S felt such an opportunity was not to be missed to inform people about the plight of Rossport and the war Shell, Statoil and Vermillion Oil are waging against its residents with full support of the Irish State. The abhorrent jailing of Pat O’ Donnell was much publicised also. Over 400 copies of the excellent “Someday Independent” were distributed, along with copies of the Afri documents, DVDs and more. 6 banners were hung throughout the city’s busiest intersections, including directly over the parade route. ... read full story / add a comment

VERONA It happened night after night. Sometimes in the bedroom of the priest, sometimes in the bathroom, sometimes even in the confessional. Alessandro Vantini (now 59) was a deaf boy at a Catholic school, priests abused him so often that it felt "like I was dead". This year Vantini and dozens of other former students did something very unusual for Italians: They went out with the accusation that they were forced to have s*x with priests. So you are urgently in need of an Irish passport? Well never fear. Forget the queues at the passport office in Molesworth St, Dublin. Thanks to the actions of the Galway Alliance Against War today, Wednesday 24th March, a new Israeli Consulate was set up on Galway’s Shop Street. And as everyone knows, if you need an Irish passport in a hurry then just go to the Israelis and especially to Mossad. Brandishing the Star of David flag GAAW members were handing out fake Irish passports to anyone who wanted one. No questions asked. And if you had your own Irish passport handy the same people were offering 5000 Israeli shekels to be allowed to clone it. All in defence of the Israeli state, don’t you know.? ... read full story / add a comment

Catherine Nevin’s appeal against her conviction for murder began in the Court of Appeal Monday. Ms Nevin was convicted in 2000 of the murder of her husband Tom at their pub, Jack White's Inn, Brittas Bay, on March 19, 1996. It was alleged that she had tried to hire three men to kill him. The person who fired the gun has never been identified or charged. The appeal will be based on evidence that prosecutors failed to disclose at her original trial that witnesses , William McClean and former provos Gerry Heapes and John Jones, were long-standing police informers . Nevin’s lawyer sought access to classified documents including security files which indicate that Mr McClean was a suspect in the Dublin/Monaghan bombings of 1974. Other new matters are being heard. Catherine Nevin's conviction shocked many, as she was tried surrounded by a media frenzy, in which she was pilloried for looking too good. All the evidence used to convict her was provided by the three witnesses. ... read full story / add a comment

Developers plan to build a housing estate right in the middle of Sligo's deciduous forest. This would endanger the habitats of many rare and protected species of plants and animals and take away the magic of the forest which has provided inspiration for so many, including W.B. Yeats. The proposal was rejected but has been appealed. ... read full story / add a comment

A book titled Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner’s Guide, written by Ben White and published by Pluto Press will be launched in Trinity College, Dublin, on Thursday 25th March, at 6.45pm. The event, hosted by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC), will take place in the Robert Emmet Theatre, Arts Block, in TCD. The author will speak on his book and all are welcome to attend. Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner's Guide distils the work of academics and experts into a highly readable text. This is a key book to read if you want to understand the roots of the conflict and how apartheid applies to the situation in Palestine. In an evening chaired by Senator David Norris, author Ben White will discuss his book, the mechanics of Israeli Apartheid and its impact on the daily lives of Palestinians. NOTE FOR JOURNALISTS: Journalists are especially welcome at this event and interviews with the author can be arranged in advance by contacting Dr Fintan Lane (IPSC Media Officer) at 087 1258325. ... read full story / add a comment
