For Immediate Publication. This is the second year that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presence at the UN is causing a storm of international protests. Last year, it was primarily due to Neda Agha-Soltan’s murder in broad daylight at a Tehran protest and this year it is the Iran stoning case of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Last year, under public pressure, Ahmadinejad outrageously declared that Neda had been killed by protestors rather than the regime’s own security forces. This year, he has outrageously announced that Sakineh was never sentenced to death by stoning. The reason for his absurd claim is not that there is any truth in it but because of the massive international protest movement against stoning and executions in Iran led by the International Committee against Stoning and the International Committee against Execution. ... read full story / add a comment

Niall McNally SIPTU Organiser The recent announcement by Stormont Finance Minister Sammy Wilson, that the Assembly would need to make cuts of more than £2 billion is deeply worrying and must not be allowed to proceed. There must be united resistance against what can only be described as economic absurdity. We simply cannot allow a Tory government to impose cuts that may see the loss of up to 40,000 jobs. Laying waste to the public sector, and exerting huge pressure on the private sector, which will be expected too but cannot fill this unimaginable gap. ... read full story / add a comment

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the findings of the UN Human Rights Council investigation into Israel’s attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and called for the Irish Government to take action to sanction Israel over its illegal raid. The report found that Israel’s siege of Gaza is illegal and therefore the assault on the flotilla, which left nine people dead, was also illegal. Its findings also made clear that Israeli forces had unlawfully executed at least six people at sea, and used “extreme” and “unnecessary” violence against people – including Irish nationals - both at sea and in captivity. ... read full story / add a comment

Pyjama Girls isn't your typical commerical release. Its a film which deserves a space on Indymedia. Pyjama Girls, a new Irish documentary by Maya Derrington that examines the lives of two of Dublin’s ‘pyjama girls’, will screen at some of the country’s most prominent cinemas as part of a DIY distribution campaign. The film sold out its week-long run at Dublin’s IFI and was moved from the smallest to the largest screen after one day. IFI director Sarah Glennie says “the film attracted a new audience profile to the cinema – it’s pyjama mania!” ... read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Publication One Law for All Protest the Pope 7 September 2010 One Law for All is adding its support to Protest the Pope. Spokesperson, Maryam Namazie, will be speaking at the 18 September march and rally beginning at Hyde Park Corner at 1.30pm (www.protest-the-pope.org.uk). One Law for All’s opposition to Sharia courts and religion’s adverse role in public life necessitates a criticism of the Pope and Vatican. Whilst the Pope is free to travel to meet his supporters, he cannot be free from criticism, particularly given that his visit is a state one and because of his and the Vatican’s regressive policies. Amongst other things, the Pope and Vatican are opposed to equal rights for women and homosexuals as well as condom distribution to AIDS-ravaged societies in Africa. They have refused to address many thousands of cases of child sex abuse and torture, deliberately perverting the course of justice in these cases, and moving predatory priests from location to location giving them the opportunity to re-offend. ... read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Release. According to an open letter published today, September 3rd, by Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, son of Mrs. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, under the pretext of the publication in the London Times of a photo of a woman without Islamic hijab, Sakineh has been sentenced to 99 lashes on charges of spreading corruption and indecency. On August 28, The Times mistakenly published a front page photo of a woman without Islamic hijab and attributed the image as that of Mrs. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. However, the photo was actually of another woman, Mrs. Susan Hejrat, a political activist living in Sweden. The photo of Mrs. Hejrat had been published earlier on a website along with her article about Sakineh. ... read full story / add a comment
