BRU TO ENGAGE IN ALL OUT INDEFINITE STRIKE FROM MONDAY 6TH MARCH General Secretary Dermot O’Leary said: “Bus Éireann Management are determined to steer a course towards conflict by issuing ultimatums to staff, before they have had the opportunity to digest, never mind analyse the detail contained in this latest missive. Placing an emphasis on, as it were, parking the race to the bottom agenda for now, and replacing it with broad sweeping generalisations under insider specific language, is obviously designed to create an impression that there has been a major shift in policy, away from raiding workers’ pay packets to plug the policy induced financial gap at Expressway.” ... read full story / add a comment
The latest issue of People's News -for 15th Feb carries a lead article on the current housing bubble. The free movement of capital has become one of the maxims of global capitalism. Along with the free movement of people, goods and services it is also one of the “four freedoms” of the EU’s single market. But the removal of the policy instrument of capital controls has probably contributed to a succession of financial crises. Three decades ago, many people in the EU invested their hopes in a combination of free trade, free mobility of capital, a fixed exchange rate, and an independent monetary policy — dubbed an “inconsistent quartet.” ... read full story / add a comment

Garda Maurice McCabe was an honest Garda who was horrified by the way that ‘respected’ and well connected people got their penalty points written off. When he reported this practice, he was immediately ostracised. Senior officials saw him as a dangerous outsider who was upsetting local networks of privilege. Far from being ground down, Maurice McCabe started to look at other malpractices. He blew the whistle on how Gardai in the Cavan –Monaghan area deliberately reduced a charge against Gerard McGrath who had viciously assaulted a female taxi driver. ... read full story / add a comment

A campaign which has called on consumers to boycott farmed salmon this year have included ‘organic’ farmed salmon because of the use of chemicals. The campaign by 10 environmental groups under the banner of WildFish.ie takes aim at the appalling environmental impact of salmon farms as well as the human health risks of this practice. The Boycott Farmed Salmon’s 2016 Christmas campaign has added the word ‘ORGANIC’ to its campaign’s name after the Minister refused to enforce the EU Regulations which require that whenever chemical medicines are used on organic products ‘treated stock shall be clearly identifiable’. ... read full story / add a comment

BirdWatch Ireland remains steadfast in calling for the sustainable management of Ireland's fish stocks. Our recently-published report, Life on The Edge, provides the background to some of the key issues and concerns we have regarding management of fisheries and protection of seabirds in Irish waters. With mixed outcomes from this year's December Council in Brussels, in 2017 BirdWatch Ireland will continue to urge Minister Michael Creed to listen to the science and set sustainable catch limits for all stocks. He must provide justification for any decisions not to listen to the science, including the longer-term impact on the health of fish stocks and the social and economic well-being of coastal communities. ... read full story / add a comment

Fluoride addition to public water supplies is a government program started in the early 1900's when it was believed that fluoride strengthened teeth without building up in any other organ. Now that we know the brain is a target for fluoride and that fluoride ingestion doesn't reduce tooth decay, it's time for the EPA to stop playing politics, honor the science and ban water fluoridation for good. EPA has been served with a citizens' petition from environmental, health and medical groups that must, by law, be answered in 90 days. ... read full story / add a comment

Press Release - 30th Nov 2016 At a press conference this morning on the Dail Plinth, AAA-PBP TDs reacted to the findings of the Expert Commission on Water Charges. Paul Murphy TD said “The report by the Expert Commission is a political fudge to allow Fine Gael to claim water charges are still in place and for Fianna Fail to say that water charges are gone. “The report acts as a Trojan Horse to allow for the future re-introduction of water charges. The idea of ‘excessive usage’ and a free allowance keeps the principle of paying for water in place. ... read full story / add a comment |
