Labour plans to shoehorn climate alarmism into every subject on the school syllabus. This indoctrination in dubious official 'science' is grimly reminiscent of the Soviet Union, says Steven Tucker.

This report was originally filed on 8th Mar by ShannonWatch. A recent report by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism entitled CIA tactics in Pakistan include targeting rescuers and funerals is deeply worrying. Not only are civilians being killed in the initial so-called "targeted attacks" but it now appears to be US Government/CIA policy under the President Obama administration to send in secondary drone bombing attacks on the rescuer's who go in to drag survivors from the burning buildings. Even worse, there have been several incidents whereby the subsequent funerals of the victims of earlier drone attacks have been attacked by CIA drone bombings causing huge casualties among the mourners. ... read full story / add a comment

STATEMENT ON LUAS DRIVERS’ DISPUTE WITH TRANSDEV

The massive rejection by Luas drivers of the proposed settlement from the WRC is absolutely justified.

Despite the perception of the deal, the WRC proposals represented a major setback for Luas drivers who rejected this as a “divisive pay deal”.

Drivers would have to work an extra twelve days a year, the increase of 18.5% over three years would only apply to a minority of drivers and disgracefully, the new entrants rates of pay were being pushed back to 2004 rates at €29,000 per annum. ... read full story / add a comment

The European Ombudsman’s Office is to review its decision to close the file against the Commission’s handling of a complaint over alleged failure to notify consumers of the levels of water-borne toxins trihalomethanes [THMs] linked to cancers in Irish public water supplies.

During the Commission investigation the Irish authorities told the Commission that THMs exceed the WHO/EU permitted parameters in 412,000 of Irish Water’s 1.5m customer base, more than 1,000,000 consumers. THMS are a group of more than 60 chemicals, including chloroform which are disinfectant by products created when water with a high organic matter – such as peaty water or excessive algae – is treated with chlorine. ... read full story / add a comment

Since 2008, during one of the worst financial crises to hit the state, government funding of the arts sector was significantly reduced as the overall Departmental budget has seen an increase. Department of the Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht reports show that central funding increased from 245,000,000 Euro in 2008 to 310,000,000 Euro in 2016. During this same period Arts Council reports show a fall in their funding from 81,620,000 Euro to 59,100,000 Euro. This has resulted in a fall in supports to the individual artist who the sector rely on to maintain Ireland as a place that is known for its living culture and the arts. ... read full story / add a comment

The ongoing disaster that is Salmon farming both here in Ireland and around the world continues to demonstrate this industry is doing huge damage to the wild salmon and is overall destructive of the ecosystem. Not only that farmed salmon are regularly dosed in deadly toxic chemicals in a desperate effort to keep the sea lice parasites and disease under control and in every case they don't keep any control and the diseases just get more resistant. Salmon are simply not evolved to live in cages in extremely close proximity to tens of thousands of other salmon.

In this report, a letter from Ireland Against Salmon Farms outlines the most recent major salmon farm escape from a salmon farm off Clare Island, Co. Mayo. ... read full story / add a comment

Dangerous CETA deal must be rejected.

Promises from the EU and Canada that they have improved the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) are fooling no-one, according to Friends of the Earth Europe. It remains a dangerous agreement that gives special right to corporations and threatens our democracy and the environment, says the group.

The Sunday Business Post ran a story claiming that vulture funds who bought up the loan books of Irish financial institutions are likely to step up pressure for payment after the general election.

The report in the Sunday Business Post is a terrible warning of what is to come. Far from years where we enjoy a new ‘fiscal space’ there is more economic turmoil ahead.

US vulture funds were encouraged to come into this country to buy up debt at incredibly low prices. The debts of both mortgage holders and small business enterprises became another opportunity for profit making. ... read full story / add a comment

The “Sign the Pledge” campaign, coordinated by Fracking Free Network, is a big success. 154 candidates in this year’s General Election have so far personally signed the pledge against fracking! From all parties and from all constituencies, candidates have committed to support legislation that will ban fracking in Ireland. There is no doubt that the issue of fracking is now a national rather than a local issue.
