Iran's Supreme Court has rejected Ja'far Kazemi's request to appeal against his death sentence. The sentence was imposed for his alleged participation in anti-government demonstrations and links with a banned organization. His sentence may be carried out at any time. Six other people with alleged links to the same organization are said to be under sentence of death. Ja'far Kazemi was arrested on 18 September 2009 and interrogated and possibly tortured for months in Evin prison in Tehran. He was accused of participating in protests which followed the disputed outcome of Iran's presidential election in June 2009, but was not accused of committing any violent acts; and for his alleged contact with banned opposition group the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). He was sentenced to death for "enmity against God", and is also believed to have been convicted of "propaganda against the system". On 26 April, he learned that his death sentence had been confirmed by an appeal court. A further appeal was apparently rejected in late July ... read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Publication. According to a report disseminated by the International Committee against Execution, in addition to Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, at least 21 others in the Islamic Republic's prisons are living with the nightmare of a stoning conviction. At any moment, their sentences could be implemented. These verdicts should be overturned immediately and this despicable punishment against humanity should be abolished everywhere and forever. ... read full story / add a comment

Dear John, Although you were born in Ireland, you may not be aware that on 12th August the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) launched its "boycott pledge" campaign, whereby over 140 (now over 160 and counting) Irish artists undertook "not to avail of any invitation to perform or exhibit in Israel, nor to accept any funding from any institution linked to the government of Israel, until such time as Israel complies with international law and universal principles of human rights." ... read full story / add a comment

The REPUBLICAN NETWORK FOR UNITY (RNU) Cathaoirleach/Chairperson, DANNY MCBREARTY, has called for the proposed parades bill to be “Binned rather than Revised” because the misjudgments at the very heart of the proposed the measure run too deep to be papered over by a few corrective amendments as suggested by the language of the joint announcement by Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness. ... read full story / add a comment

Because of human rights omission New Zealand has suffered major social problems, some social statistics worse than other countries, at the bottom of the social scale but it is hidden from mainstream New Zealanders. Fear is pervasive and there is a sense of hoelessness which is holding back progress and adaptation to global changes. A focus on the truth rather than power politics and the 'money grab' will help overcome this. It has, in my opinion, modeled itself on the British class system permitting mass social class discrimination. ... read full story / add a comment

Yesterday morning forty people from around Sruwaddacon Estuary brought Shell’s survey work in the area to a complete standstill. The community walked out onto the mudflats at low tide to assert their cockle-picking rights and disrupt Shell’s borehole drilling survey. At around 11.30am people converged at Aughoose and walked down a public right of way onto the mudflats. The group walked to one of the two jack-up barges and prevented drilling by walking underneath the platform. IRMS - Shell’s private security firm – tried to block their free passage but the people prevailed and walked where they pleased. Three people scaled the legs of the barge and occupied them for about four hours. One person chained himself to the one of the drill-shafts in order to stop the work. ... read full story / add a comment

Once again, the discredited Parades Commission has permitted an unwelcome sectarian parade to pass through the Greater Ardoyne community to then board a bus at the rear of Holy Cross Church, to travel to Derry. GARC feel it is necessary to inform the wider public that this parade has nothing to do with the Protestant religion, heritage or culture. So those who insist on this act of provocation need to justify why? ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish Climate Camp will take place this year at Victoria Bridge, County Tyrone, from the 12th to the 16th of August. The camp is taking place in support of the local community and their opposition to the proposed new A5 – a project that will cost a lot of money, a lot of energy (carbon emissions) and really makes no logical sense since vehicle numbers using that route have decreased considerably over recent years. Climate camp Ireland is a group of individuals that believe in taking direct action to prepare for and mitigate the effects of climate change. The camp is open to anyone to attend, and will host numerous workshops on many aspects of climate change. ... read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Publication. Iran stoning case, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is at imminent risk of execution in Tabriz prison. Moreover, her well known human rights lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei, is in prison in Turkey after having fled the country to evade arrest for his advocacy work. His wife remains in prison in Iran – held hostage – until he is remanded into the regime’s custody (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1652). Given Turkey’s close relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mostafaei can face deportation back to Iran even though he has applied for refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees there. Campaigners are concerned about the safety of Mostafaei and his wife. We are also extremely concerned for Ashtiani’s life. The regime may be preparing to execute her within the next few days, particularly given that the Tabriz prosecutor has demanded her execution and is awaiting the Tehran high court’s confirmation (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1665). ... read full story / add a comment
