(CAIRO) Gaza Freedom Marchers yesterday, 1st January 2010, approved a declaration aimed at accelerating the global campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli Apartheid. Roughly 1400 activists from 43 countries converged in Cairo on their way to Gaza to join with Palestinians marching to break Israel's illegal siege. They were prevented from entering Gaza by the Egyptian authorities. As a result, the Freedom Marchers remained in Cairo. They staged a series of nonviolent actions aimed at pressuring the international community to end the siege as one step in the larger struggle to secure justice for Palestinians throughout historic Palestine. The Galway Alliance Against War is throwing a New Year’s Day Peace Party in the Rowing Club in Woodquay Galway on January 1st starting at 7pm and admission is FREE. The Guest of Honour will be Malalai Joya, a female member of the Afghan parliament, who has survived 4 assassination attempts – she is hated by both the Karzai regime that banned her from parliament and the Taliban. Human Rights Watch described her as “the bravest woman in Afghanistan”. This of course distracts from the fact that all hunts except drag hunts are out to kill and terrorise animals. After all that is why they exist- to abuse animals for fun. Shannonwatch are concerned at the ongoing use of Shannon airport by companies and planes associated with the illegal US rendition program. Since March 2009, five aircraft that have been identified by Amnesty International, the EU Parliament or other sources have been recorded there. One of these planes, a Gulfstream IV with registration N478GS made news in early October when it was met by British military helicopters on a runway at Birmingham International Airport. On the 27th of December, 10 Irish people in 3 vehicles loaded with humanitarian aid will attempt to cross into Gaza. They will have spent 3 weeks on the road, and cover over 4,000 miles. The Irish Government is failing children with mental health difficulties. Urgent reform of the mental health system for children and young people under 18 years is desperately needed. In response, the Children’s Rights Alliance and Amnesty International Ireland have brought together 38 NGOs to form the Children’s Mental Health Coalition. The Minister for the Environment Mr. John Gormley was today urged to immediately suspend the licence he granted earlier in the autumn to the Ward Union Stag Hunt following a serious incident last Friday when a deer being hunted by the Ward Union was chased onto the main road between Ashbourne and Slane. The deer, which was hit by an on-coming Mercedes, was seriously injured and had to be put down at the scene.
