As society tears itself apart and reactionary forces come to the fore, well organised and confident of success. The left, the anti-authoritarians, the radicals and alternatives are in utter disarray. The only glimpse of light in the darkness of a seemingly overwhelming anti-liberation tsunami has been the acts of publicised resistance by the Anarchists in London and Greece. Although more spectactular pantomime for televison consumers. The mega machine of oppression remains intact and the negativity it creates in the human mind becomes overwhelming. ... read full story / add a comment

There is not one word on his literature about his position on abortion, civil partnership, his opposition to gay rights in general, his opposition to sex education. Not one word about religious values. No reference to his support for the Iona Institute and the right wing economic policies of its director David Quinn (overspending on public services was the problem) His Brief CV makes no mention of his period as sec to archbishop Connell. In October 2010, the Irish website Count Me Out, which had until then supplied the forms needed to carry out formal Defection from the Roman Catholic Church, suspended distribution of the forms and its own activity as a result of a statement from the Catholic Church in Ireland regarding the acceptance of defection requests. But was the Archdiocese of Dublin being truthful when it issued its statement? Italian anti-clericalist Francesca Palazzi Arduini examines the changes in which led to the Church's statement and finds that the answer is "NO".. ... read full story / add a comment

Recent events in Japan and revelations by wikileaks regarding the nefarious and corrupt activities of the nuclear industry working in India should be a wake up call for those considering the arguments of vested interests who are quietly pushing the nuclear agenda in our media. It would certainly be a nice profitable centralised earner for themselves and their friends but a panacea for our future energy woes it certainly ain't! ... read full story / add a comment

Yassamine Mather examines the reality of the continuing struggle against the regime's oppression. On March 8, for the second time in a week, demonstrators gathered in the streets of Tehran and other major cities in Iran to protest against the regime - despite its attempts at suppression, its armed security forces, its tear gas and its arrests. Thirty-two years ago, on March 8 1979, tens of thousands of Iranian women took part in the first major demonstration against the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran, following the forced imposition of the hijab. The women’s slogans were: “I say it every moment, I say it under torture: either death or freedom!” “Freedom is neither eastern nor western: it is universal!” “Death to censorship!” “In the dawn of freedom, the place of women is empty: revolution is meaningless without women’s freedom - we do not want the hijab!” ... read full story / add a comment

With the vitsit of the British Monarch to Dublin due to take place in May 2011, many Irisih Republican's consider this to be the last part of a process which has been aimed at solidifying the partition of Ireland and legitimising the continuing British occupation of six northen counties. A process that began with the establishment of a 'friendly' (in British terms) leadership of the Irish Republican Movement in 1986, continuing through ceasefires, decommissioning, treaties and open support for the British colonial police, referred to as the PSNI. The visit by the British Monarch to Dublin is seen by many as the concluding part in this drawn out process. ... read full story / add a comment

The following letter appeared in various newspapers last year addressing the issue of Orangism and the Orange Order in particular. I came across it and believe it is worthy of republication here. Specifically as the issue that is addressed is the clash between Republican ideology and Orangism, which have become pertenent with the debate around the British Monarch coming to Dublin in May. The traditional battle between Republican's and Monarchists is still with us and will remain while the so-called Irish Question is unresolved ... read full story / add a comment

The employers have been on an offensive against the working class for the past forty years. The assaults on the public sector are the latest fronts. Unfortunately the union leaders have gone along with this offensive. In the present battles they bleat that they will get their members to give concessions as long as they can negotiate these. In essence this is what the union leaders position boils down to. Let us negotiate and we will get our members to make concessions. Of course this would continue to give the union leaders a role. The union leaders fear a victory in Madison and elsewhere because this would show that victories are possible and that defeat in front of this bosses offense is always inevitable. If this was shown it would undermine the entire propaganda of the union leaders and weaken their control of the movement. They prefer defeat to this. ... read full story / add a comment

This is not a call for philanthropy. This is a call for solidarity to 300 proud and brave people who are determined to sacrifice their life in order to claim their right to a better future. They want the same thing our forefathers wanted when they decided to migrate. They are not strangers, they are not invisible, they are not disposable. They are dignified human beings who teach us a hard lesson about true struggle. ... read full story / add a comment

FF, FG, Labour, ex-PDs, and other shades of establishement opinion are putting themselves forward as 'independents' in the upcoming election to Seanad Éireann. The mask of 'disability campaigner' or 'human rights advocate' is unfortunately the last refuge of some of them. This is most obvious on the university constituencies.
