Workers move en masse against the water charges. Their leaders can no longer hold them back. The left no longer have an excuse not to themselves be able to build a mass force. The left sectarianism, ultra leftism and opportunism of these groups has to be confronted. ... read full story / add a comment

It may very well be coincidence that just when Israel was starting to take some heat for its atrocious war crimes and policy in Gaza at the end of this summer of 2014 along comes a newly name-minted entity engaging in sensational beheadings for news-grabbing attention. Whether red herring cover just happens to be luck for Israel and the United States in regards to committing and tolerating war crimes or whether there was some conspiracy is not that relevant but what is relevant is that the people of the world cannot let other more recent events erase from memory what the world witnessed in Gaza. ... read full story / add a comment

The anti-water charges campaign is a populist campaign driven by the opportunist politics of the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and other organisations including the UNITE trade union. The Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party merely view the campaign as a means to enhance their popularity within the working class while opportunistically impeding the development of communist consciousness among the working class. ... read full story / add a comment

Sinn Fein I believe are rightly under attack for the issues around the Cahill case and the way they are said to have handled this. Abuse of women (and Men) exists in the revolutionary left also. When this comes up the leadership of these organizations usually try to cover this up by citing the supposed interests of the organization concerned and the revolution. This puts enormous pressure of the victims of assault and has to be condemned. ... read full story / add a comment

Single issue demands such as the movement against water rates hold back the class struggle by suggesting that capitalism can continue in the absence of these charges or taxes. This is because such demands are not embedded in a programme of an interlinked series of demands that challenges the capitalist system. ... read full story / add a comment

The rhetoric by the Sinn Fein, the Anti Austerity Alliance and the People Before Profit Alliance featuring on RTE's Prime Time programme amounts to nothing but illusion. Their election candidates showed no understanding of the need for revolution. Their rhetoric suggested that capitalism can be managed or reformed to the benefit of the working class by effectively taxing the rich and not the working class. Indeed the entire show confined itself to suggestions as to how to reform capitalism in one way or another. In that way the participants sought to effectively defend the capitalist system. Essentially all contributors were essentially advocating bourgeois politics. If the Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party were genuinely revolutionary they would have challenged RTE and its other contributors by advocating the need for revolution. ... read full story / add a comment

I have to ask: does the Catholic Church have a death wish?

Hare coursing is a horribly cruel “sport” that is a crime in many jurisdictions. It’s bad enough that the Irish government allows it…but this week pictures circulating on social media (twitter and facebook) clearly show a Catholic Priest officially BLESSING a hare coursing venue. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish government is charging for public water as part of its TISA signup. This is just the start, we will all pay for all water if they have their way, even if we don't get any services from Irish Water. Parties such as the SP, SWP and Sinn Fein are essentially no different from each other nor from Fine Gael, the Labour Party and Fianna Fail. We are all familiar with the monstrous crimes that have been carried out by the Catholic hierarchy in Ireland, the slave labor in the Magadlene prison laundries, the physical and sexual abuse in the children's prisons. The victims have to be given compensation. Not by the taxpayers but from the vast wealth of the Catholic church. More generally responsibility has to be allotted for this. Responsibility lies with different forces, the Catholic hierarchy, the Irish capitalist class, but also the members of the Catholic church. John Throne. ... read full story / add a comment
