On March 25th workers at Mr. Binman’s Carrick-on-Suir depot in Tipperary were called into a general meeting. The privatized bin company wanted pay cuts of 10% across the board from the workers. The following day workers were called one by one into management offices and told that for them, 10% would not be enough. Wage cuts of 20, 30, 40 or even 49% were demanded. In response, the workers organized a meeting of their own. They quickly learned that, not only were there different pay cuts for different workers – there was also different pay rates, different work hours and different conditions. They decided to fight these pay cuts, and get unionised, joining SIPTU. The company refused to recognize the union, or negotiate with them, and strike notice was served. read full story / add a comment

The 2nd referendum on the lisbon treaty will be held shortly because we voted wrong the first time and the political elite of Europe are not happy with us Irish. “They are bloody fools,” “They have been stuffing their faces at Europe’s expense for years and now they dump us in the s***.” Nicolas Sarkozy told aides, according to le Canard Enchaîné weekly after the No vote - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/arti...6.ece . This is an obsure but alarming article. I had to read it twice to figure what it was saying: that it is a crime to advocate boycotting Israeli products in France. A man has been fined €1000 for organising a boycott of Israeli products; and the French appeals court and Council of Europe's European Court of Human Rights upheld this. read full story / add a comment

Here Joe Higgins, the Socialist Party MEP for Dublin, talks about the recent electricians´ strike, the disgusting attacks on it by the bosses and media, and how we can all learn from their suyccess of the electricians. You would think from reading some newspaper articles and editorials that workers go on strike to deliberately wreak havoc on whichever sector they work in, or on society in general. Take the 10,500 strong electricians strike last week. "Strike flies in the face of reason" pompously declared an editorial in a daily newspaper. An economic commentator went one better, calling the strike "insane and delusional". Former Minister of State and current Chief Executive of the Construction Industry Federation, Tom Parlon outshouted them all when he said that "we cannot let the lunatics be in charge." read full story / add a comment

"U2 now have their heads inserted so far up their anterior orifices it’s doubtful they’ll ever succeed in uncorking themselves. Does it not occur to them that the reason there might be a new resentment of the rich on this island is that we have just seen the mass of the people ripped off, homes lost, jobs destroyed, wages slashed, to save the sin-crinkled skin of the hoodlums who have run the economy into ruin? I suppose not" In his Counterpunch article Geldolf doesn't escape the withering contempt of scourge of hypocrisy Eamonn McCann ... read full story / add a comment

Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon (IFPAL) is an organisation founded in June 2009 to call for a No vote in the imminent second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, on the grounds that the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) is inimical to the interests of the Palestinian people and detrimental to Ireland's relationship with the Arab and Islamic world. read full story / add a comment |
