Yesterday was a beautiful beautiful day and a very very important one. 10 days after the "Spanish Revolution" kicked off peacefully all over Spain, it has been replicated massively in the homeland of Democracy, Greece. Yesterdat, M25, 20,000 people took to the streets and squares all over Greece... 7,000 alone and absolutely peaceful in Constitution square in athens. They have been inspired by Spain and the simple core idea of the movement; That we have had enough, that we are "indignant", we will not take it any more, its time to stand up, take to the streets, occupy squares, create a "true democracy"... and hope that the Spark of peaceful Revoution spreads all over this little planet... Massive joint police operation with helicopter presence is clearing the camp in Barcelona at this moment under the order of the Catalan Interior Ministry so that Catalonia Square may be free for the traditional celebration of Barca football club who play in Wembley this weekend. All are agreed, something amazing is happening right here and right now on this beautiful little planet. And, by Christ do we need it!!! A week ago, even in Spain, there wasn’t too much awareness of what was going on with the M-15 movement, but now, only days later and it appears that a bomb has gone off. Last look on the digital map of places participating in the #SPANISHREVOLUTION gave a count of 650 (yes that’s right SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY) places around the planet expressing solidarity with what’s going on here in Spain, or being inspired to bring the revolution to their part of the world. read full story / add a comment

In response to Shell's AGM today in The Hague and London, the Shell to Sea campaign have shut down the Belmullet Shell office in protest against the on-going controversial Corrib Gas project which has no local consent or benefit to the people of Ireland. Shell will attempt to begin construction on the high pressure raw gas pipeline shortly despite a legal challenge by An Taisce and two local residents. This protest is also to highlight the fact that every hour Shell accumulates another £1.6 million pounds sterling ( 1.83 million Euro) by destroying communities across the globe, from the Niger Delta to the Canadian Tar Sands. Shell's appalling record of human rights abuses, oil spills, gas flaring and accidents forces people to protect their communities and their environment. Imprisoned Iranian film-makers Mohammad Rasoulof and Jafar Panahi have both found success in Cannes. Mohammad Rasoulof's latest film Good Bye (Bé Omid É Didar) has found a world wide distributor. Jafar Panahi will be awarded the Carrosse d'Or in absentia. This year’s Academy will take place in Dublin between June 17th and 19th and is completely free of charge for 15 selected applicants. On Wednesday, 4 May, at 11am, Irish multinational CRH will hold their Annual General Meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign plan a highly visual photo-friendly protest outside the venue, featuring a mock checkpoint with soldiers, scale model wall, and a 'human wall'. This is a call out to all solidarity activists to turn up on the morning and become part of a striking human wall along Marine Road. The wall will symbolise the illegal separation wall built by Israel in the occupied West Bank and will highlight CRH’s involvement with the wall and settlements. read full story / add a comment

On 26th April two Open Letters were published concerning Riverdance's planned tour of Israel in September 2011. The first is from Irish artist Robert Ballagh who was the set designer for Riverdance, and the second is from Raymond Deane, Cultural Boycott Officer of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign. read full story / add a comment |
