We will be screening The Pipe movie on 20th April at The Happy Pear in Greystones. This amazing movie tells the story of the local, grassroots community effort in Rossport, County Mayo (Ireland) to halt the planned laying of a gas pipeline by Shell Oil, across fishing grounds and pastoral farmland, following the discovery of a large supply field offshore. read full story / add a comment

3.36pm: Here's a mid-afternoon round-up of the huge protest in London against the government's public sector spending cuts.

•Around 500,000 people have joined the TUC's rally against the government's public sector spending cuts in central London.

•The main group of the marchers demonstrated peacefully and walked along the pre-planned route from Embankment to Hyde Park.

•Anti cuts and tax avoidance protesters closed down more than 13 shops on Oxford Street whilst many more shut their doors

•The protest has been largely without violent incident but a breakaway group of protesters attacked shops and banks in the Oxford Street area. A scuffle broke out between a handful of activists and police in New Bond Street.

The people of Ireland should consider a Boycott in relation the upcoming Census in April 2011. The reason I say this is that the company contracted to carry out the Census is CACI UK who are a subsidiary of CACI international which through its various outsourcing has been accused of contributing to the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib in Iraq, something I myself am not happy about, and it will be one of the reason's why I will not be completing the Census form this time. read full story / add a comment

Recent events in Japan and revelations by wikileaks regarding the nefarious and corrupt activities of the nuclear industry working in India should be a wake up call for those considering the arguments of vested interests who are quietly pushing the nuclear agenda in our media. It would certainly be a nice profitable centralised earner for themselves and their friends but a panacea for our future energy woes it certainly ain't! read full story / add a comment

FF, FG, Labour, ex-PDs, and other shades of establishement opinion are putting themselves forward as 'independents' in the upcoming election to Seanad Éireann. The mask of 'disability campaigner' or 'human rights advocate' is unfortunately the last refuge of some of them. This is most obvious on the university constituencies. Here I have outlined the party loyalties of some of them. read full story / add a comment

The first Re:Public2011 event in the Button Factory on the 15th of February was such a great success., we have been encouraged to hold another big Dublin debate as soon as possible. It was a full house and had really great energy. The audience were amazing. We trended on Twitter because people were tweeting so much. The candidates all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to engage. We hope that after they are elected and sitting in the Dail, they will still enjoy that opportunity, because the next Dublin debate will be with elected TDs read full story / add a comment

Today, in an even more meaningless exercise then normal, a minority of the population of Ireland will choose between two almost identical options as to who will implement the ECB / IMF austerity plans for southern Ireland. Outside of this plan the wealthiest 1% will continue to set economic policy tomorrow as they did yesterday and have throughout the last decades. The electoral circus we are now going through provides the rest of us with the illusion of control even though deep down almost everyone acknowledges the ritual as having no real impact on what policies are actually implemented. read full story / add a comment

Dylan Haskins is running as an Independent in Dublin South East. He's young, idealistic and already done many interesting things in his 23 years, from being a DIY punk setting up an all ages punk music gig venue to film making to helping set up Exchange in Dublin. Now he's running for election in tomorrows Irish elections.

Young and naive, perhaps. But a positive breath of fresh air, absolutely. Ireland is fucked at present, maybe Dylan and his bold (anarcho)punk inspired ideas might be exactly whats needed to get things on track? read full story / add a comment

Ruben Markarian of the Organisation of Revolutionary Workers of Iran addressed the Hopi AGM in London on 12 February 2011. Here is an extract from his speech. The full text is at the url.

Before discussing recent political events in Iran, please allow me to commemorate a very significant event in modern Iranian history - the Siahkhal uprising, which took place 40 years ago. This event produced the Fedayeen movement after two decades of stagnation and reformism on the left. The Fedayeen initiated armed struggle against the shah’s regime. In so doing they revived the Iranian left and turned it into the main force in the struggle against the shah and against imperialism in Iran. We should commemorate our fallen comrades and their memory - they died for socialism and freedom and passed on militant traditions to the next generation of Iranians. read full story / add a comment
