Peter Sutherland has thrown his considerable weight behind the bank bailouts, and has told us we need to tighten our belts to do it. This is the same Peter Sutherland who helped bail out Garret Fitzgerald while a director of Allied Irish Banks. This is the Garret Fitzgerald who has told us we need to be patriots by not disagreeing with the bank bailouts. That was Allied Irish Banks, the profit-privatising institution which is now socialising its losses on us. This is Peter Sutherland, Chairman of Goldman Sachs, one of the biggest bondholders of Allied Irish Banks' debt, and thus one of the biggest potential beneficiaries of the bank bailouts.

The use of nuclear weapons in a new war would mean the end of humanity. This was candidly foreseen by scientist Albert Einstein who was able to measure their destructive capability to generate millions of degrees of heat, which would vaporize everything within a wide radius of action. This brilliant researcher had promoted the development of this weapon so that it would not become available to the genocidal Nazi regime. read full story / add a comment

French strikes continue. Strikes spread across the country on fourth day of nationwide protests over pension reforms. Three fuel storage depots have been reopened by riot police in France, as fears grow of a shortage at the pumps. Nine of the country’s 12 refineries have shut down due to strike action prompted by the government’s plans for pension reform. High school students have joined the pension protests for the first time this week. 360 high schools across the country were closed this morning due to protests by students. In Paris, one of them is in a critical condition after being hit in the face by a “flashball” – a device used by police for crowd control.

On Thursday, September 16th, Joe Gilmartin and Seamus O’Nualláin left Tipperary with a van full of aid to drive 5000 km to Gaza.
Along with others from the north and the UK, they are part of the international VIva Palestina convoy of almost 200 vehicles, $3million of medical aid, and 400 people from 30 different countries, for the people of Gaza.
Having crossed through France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, the latest news is that that the convoy is waiting in Latakia, Syria, to get a ferry to Egypt and then travel into Gaza.
The Egyptian government is currently threatening not to allow them through.

Here is the diary that Joe and Seamus have sent back. To follow their progress go to facebook page “Tipp2Gaza”.
