In response to Shell's AGM today in The Hague and London, the Shell to Sea campaign have shut down the Belmullet Shell office in protest against the on-going controversial Corrib Gas project which has no local consent or benefit to the people of Ireland. Shell will attempt to begin construction on the high pressure raw gas pipeline shortly despite a legal challenge by An Taisce and two local residents. This protest is also to highlight the fact that every hour Shell accumulates another £1.6 million pounds sterling ( 1.83 million Euro) by destroying communities across the globe, from the Niger Delta to the Canadian Tar Sands. Shell's appalling record of human rights abuses, oil spills, gas flaring and accidents forces people to protect their communities and their environment. Imprisoned Iranian film-makers Mohammad Rasoulof and Jafar Panahi have both found success in Cannes. Mohammad Rasoulof's latest film Good Bye (Bé Omid É Didar) has found a world wide distributor. Jafar Panahi will be awarded the Carrosse d'Or in absentia. The Carrosse d'Or (or Golden Coach), awarded by the Société des Réalisateurs de Films (SRF), rewards film-makers' courage and independence of thought. read full story / add a comment

This June, SpunOut.ie, Ireland’s leading online youth organisation is once again hosting its hugely popular 'Academy of Activism’ summer school. This year’s Academy will take place in Dublin between June 17th and 19th and is completely free of charge for 15 selected applicants. The weekend is aimed at young people between the ages of 18 and 25 who have a passion for social justice. On Wednesday, 4 May, at 11am, Irish multinational CRH will hold their Annual General Meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign plan a highly visual photo-friendly protest outside the venue, featuring a mock checkpoint with soldiers, scale model wall, and a 'human wall'. This is a call out to all solidarity activists to turn up on the morning and become part of a striking human wall along Marine Road. The wall will symbolise the illegal separation wall built by Israel in the occupied West Bank and will highlight CRH’s involvement with the wall and settlements. read full story / add a comment

On 26th April two Open Letters were published concerning Riverdance's planned tour of Israel in September 2011. The first is from Irish artist Robert Ballagh who was the set designer for Riverdance, and the second is from Raymond Deane, Cultural Boycott Officer of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign. read full story / add a comment

Afri, along with other global justice NGOs, has long highlighted issues surrounding 'Third World' (Global South) debt and IMF/World Bank structural adjustment - including the erosion of sovereignty in the Global South and the devastating socio-economic consequences. On Sunday April 17th at 2pm the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) marked Palestinian Prisoners Day with a demonstration at the Spire in O'Connell St, Dublin. The demonstration called for the release of all Palestinian political prisoners imprisoned by the Israeli State - those 'convicted' in Israeli Military courts and those interned without trial under the 'Administrative Detention' regime. This year there was a special focus on the issue of child prisoners - of which there are currently 216 (45 under the age of 16) being held in Israeli jails.[1] read full story / add a comment

The people of Ireland should consider a Boycott in relation the upcoming Census in April 2011.
The reason I say this is that the company contracted to carry out the Census is CACI UK who
are a subsidiary of CACI international which through its various outsourcing has been accused
of contributing to the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib in Iraq, something I myself am not happy
about, and it will be one of the reason's why I will not be completing the Census form this time. read full story / add a comment |
