The Irish Government took a case to the European Commission on Human Rights (Ireland v. United Kingdom) regarding the introduction of internment without trial and the treatment of Irish political prisoners of conscience in British Occupied Ireland. The European Commission stated that it "considered the combined use of the five methods to amount to torture, on the grounds that (1) the intensity of the stress caused by techniques creating sensory deprivation "directly affects the personality physically and mentally"; and (2) "the systematic application of the techniques for the purpose of inducing a person to give information shows a clear resemblance to those methods of systematic torture which have been known over the ages..a modern system of torture falling into the same category as those systems.applied in previous times as a means of obtaining information and confessions." read full story / add a comment

Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMD PhD, secretary, Cooley Environmental and Health Group, visited LIR (Louth Internet Radio) on Thursday of this week to talk on air about his group's 12th annual winter workshop. He was accompanied by Seán Crudden, treasurer of CEHG. Harry Lee conducted an extensive interview with both men. A podcast of the interview will remain available on the LIR website for 5 days following the interview. The workshop itself will take place on 28 January 2012 starting at 14.00 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth. The topic is Suicide Prevention. read full story / add a comment

Johannes Stern writes on how the US client Military Junta in Egypt has carried out a murderous attack on protesters. Interestingly: State TV cited US police actions against Occupy Wall Street protests to justify the repression of protests on Tahrir Square. Tellingly, many of the tear gas canisters used against Egyptian protesters were made in the US. Full text at link.
The US views the military as the backbone of the Egyptian bourgeois state, defending capitalist rule and the interests of Western imperialism in the Middle East. Ever since the mass uprising that led to the ouster of Mubarak on February 11, the Obama administration has worked closely with SCAF to try to end strikes and protests by Egyptian workers demanding social equality and democratic rights. Marian Price is a Republican who had been free on licence, from a life sentence for her part in Provisional IRA actions in London almost 40 years ago in the early 1970’s. Like Gerry McGeough and Martin Corey she has been politically interned without trial by the Queen's un-elected Englishman in Occupied Ireland, overturning a court ruling the same day, that there was no evidence to suggest, that she should not be free. read full story / add a comment

The Occupy movement has grown steadily in the past 4 weeks in Ireland. It is part of the global Occupy movement. As to what it is about is best summed up by the OccupyGalway statement:
Occupy Galway is part of the international movement against austerity measures imposed on ordinary people around the world. We are all part of the 99% who, so far, have been subject to economic inequality and social injustice from the 1% who control the world's resources. We, the 99% demand: 1 - The removal of the IMF and ECB from all Irish financial affairs; 2 - That the national debt imposed on Irish people from the bank bailouts be lifted; 3 - The return of Irish resources (gas, oil, forestry) to the people of Ireland; 4 - Real particpatory democracy. Thousands of people marched supporting #OccupyDameStreet and Real Democracy Now! Ireland from the Garden of Remembrance to the site of the ongoing occupation at the Central Bank plaza on Dame street on Saturday 22nd of October.

On Tuesday morning outside Shell's Bellanaboy refinery in Mayo 15 people blocked a Barrett's quarry truck from making a delivery of stone to Shell's tunneling compound in Aughoose, halting all other deliveries for the morning.
