Recent hysteria in the corporate media has exposed a growing fear in the capitalist establishment at the rise of socialist republicanism in Ireland, The latest example follows a protest outside Leinster House in Dublin, called to demand the Jailing of Ireland's Bankers when a group of anti- austerity protestors confronted Labour minister for communications, Pat Rabbitte. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Independent reports today:
'
Every household in the country will be hit with a new Public Service Broadcasting Charge to replace the television licence fee next year. Nobody will be able to refuse to pay the charge because it will apply regardless of whether you have a television, computer or any other device that can pick up public information. The new universal charge will be collected in a way that tackles the current very high evasion rates of the TV licence fee - suggesting the payment mechanism could be modelled on the new property tax. Currently nearly one in five households does not pay the TV licence fee and this is costing the government 30m a year in lost revenue. read full story / add a comment

The question on the lips of many people who have attended the recent anti- austerity protests in Ireland is where are the masses? Some who have taken to the streets have been disappointed by the numbers turning out, comparing Irish protests to those in Greece or Turkey and have begun to ask why arent the Irish people fighting back? read full story / add a comment

The festival involved also Theatre of Voices, Denmark. Four separate different programs were performed, one each on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. In The Pepper Canister Church. I drove from Boyle yesterday and was lucky enough to catch the performance of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas which started at 14.30 on a sultry sunny Sunday afternoon. This was an inaugural festival, a new departure for the National Chamber Choir. read full story / add a comment

A brief history of the deforestation of Ireland and why it happened.....
It is well known that Ireland has a very low level of tree cover, among the lowest of any European country in 2012 it had risen to almost 11% although it is still way below the European average of 30%. Of course about half of this 11% is Sitkha Spruce, which is non-native and causes acidification of the soil. read full story / add a comment |
