It’s now painfully clear that Obama’s war on Syria is a replay of Bush’s march to war in Iraq, both built on lies. Zero evidence has been put forth that proves the Syrian government used chemical weapons. On the contrary, evidence has been recorded that suggests the U.S.-backed Syrian rebels are responsible for the attack. read full story / add a comment

I have spent over 30 years working in journalism as a chief reporter and as news editor. In May 2012 I suffered permanent damage to my eyesight following an assault. One year later, in May 2013, the Department of Social Protection awarded me a disability allowance on the basis of the hospital surgeon's medical report regarding my condition, backdated to the date of my injury in 2012. read full story / add a comment

The recent use of chemical weapons in Damascus is without a doubt an appalling atrocity causing untold damage to human life and creating panic in the area. There can be no doubt that this was a horrifying attack which increases the already high death toll of over 100,000 people with over 1 million people displaced so far. At this point there is no definitive evidence as to who carried out this attack. As UN inspectors continue their investigation in Damascus, the US and her allies move closer to a military intervention into Syria. It is now being reported that the evidence of the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons has been supplied by Israeli military intelligence. Reminiscent of the Blair/Bush Weapons of Mass Destruction excuse for intervention, this convenient intelligence escalates the likelihood of a US military intervention in Syria. read full story / add a comment

5 years into this economic recession, at last the legal profession may be finally drawing a definitive line in the sand, in other words a precedent, that will stop the strategic defaulters playing games with the banks and debtors to whom they owe money, and make them face up to their responsibilities in Ireland, rather than shirking their responsibilities to meet their debts in their own country where they have lived so lavishly during the 'good times'. These Mr and Mrs Bankrupts like the Mr and Mrs Tax Exiles need to step up to the plate. Honour is called for not cowardice. Up to now in the absence of the Insolvency legislation, there may have been some justification but not now. read full story / add a comment

Of course I am aware of the human rights violations by the Morsi regime, but since I hold the opinion, that human rights have to respected under all circumstances, regardless of the persons involved or the comitted/accused crime, I have written this letter to General al Sisi, who by the way came into power in Egypt by a military coup. read full story / add a comment

If Bradley Manning showed the U.S. Military’s indifference to arbitrary slaughter by U.S. personnel well that is how the Old Testament lays out the ground rules in the Middle East—it is NOT the Pentagon’s fault the New Testament had some other ideals that claimed all of mankind was part of God’s family. Still it seems apparent why there was so much adamant secrecy about sharing God’s State secrets—since it seems kind of obvious Eden was not the psychological paradise it was purported to have been by the propaganda powers-that-be back then. More importantly despite there being religious precepts too often leaders of countries do whatever they want irrespective of what legal or moral codes should apply—and this goes for both Israel and the United States—so maybe the the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is that leaders can act like arbitrary Gods while expecting their subjects to follow rules? read full story / add a comment

Several hundred Iranian political and human rights activists, academics, and students inside and outside Iran wrote a letter this week to US President Barack Obama asking him to engage with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to “work towards the elimination of sanctions and the lowering of tensions between Iran and the United States.” The letter also expresses support for the 55 Iranian political prisoners who wrote a separate letter to President Obama about the impact of sanctions on Iranians. “Economic sanctions, particularly those imposed unilaterally by the United States, have taken a terrible toll on the Iranian people’s standard of living,” the group writes. They add, “We are concerned that the constant pressure applied by Congress to encourage a policy of confrontation will have negative repercussions on the nuclear negotiations.” These letters join many others that have support from civil society both within and outside Iran, including from journalists, activists, and intellectuals well known for criticizing the Iranian government, urging the removal of crippling sanctions. The full text of the letter is below. read full story / add a comment
