Tony Greenstein circulated this release. He writes: The Freedom Theatre in Jenin, a symbol of Palestinian culture, saw its artistic director, Juliano Meir-Khamis murdered by unknown assassins last year. Almost certainly the work of Israel and PA, both have used the murder to further harass the Freedom Theatre. Zubeidi has been imprisoned, without trial for nearly 4 months by the Israeli owned and funded quisling Palestinian Authority of Abbas. This is the context in which a cultural boycott of Israel is being advocated in Britain against groups like Batsheva. Please act on this appeal. On the 9th of September Zakaria Zubeidi announced that he will embark on a death fast, a complete food and fluid strike, in response to the continuous postponement of his release from Palestinian Authority prison. This effectively means that unless the Palestinian Authority releases Zakaria he will most probably not make it through the week. read full story / add a comment

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov exposes the hypocrisy of Western nations in refusing to condemn terrorist bombings in Syria. Full text at link. The Security Council has always resolved that terrorism is unacceptable, Lavrov said. But for the first time, Western member-states deviated from this position after a bombing in Damascus killed several senior security officials, he said. According to Western nations, the bombing did not qualify as terrorism since the victims were the heads of power structures fighting against insurgents, Lavrov said, claiming he was dumbfounded by such an explanation. Lavrov urged other members of the Security Council to condemn not only the Sunday bombing in the conflict-wracked Syrian city of Aleppo, which killed 27 people and wounded dozens, “but also a series of terrorist attacks that happened the same day in Iraq.” read full story / add a comment

On Friday, October 5th, a British military band are scheduled to play at the K Club in Co Kildare. The event has been co-organised by the the Security and Emergency Services Ireland Forum (SESIF) and The Jack and Jill Foundation, with the proceeds from the event being donated to the latter organisation. The SESIF is an organisation which purports to represent those who work in the 'ambulance, coast guard, fire, military, police, rescue and prisons' services. In reality much of its energies are devoted to rehabilitating the image of the paramilitary PSNI and the British Army in Ireland. The Jack and Jill Foundation is a children's charity which provides support to sick children and their families. read full story / add a comment

Observers of the north of Ireland are from time to time caught by surprise when the reality of life here contradicts their belief in a steady progress towards normality. Such a moment came outside a Catholic church in Belfast. A 12th July demonstration by one band playing a hate song went viral on Facebook and led to restrictions on further band processions outside the church. The decision of Orange order bands to break the Parades Commission ruling about marching and playing outside the Church was accompanied by unrestrained expressions of sectarian hatred more or less unlimited in the depths of bigotry that were unleashed. read full story / add a comment

Older & Bolder is calling on Minister James Reilly TD to reverse the cuts to Home Care Services announced yesterday by the HSE. Ms. Patricia Conboy, Director of Older & Bolder said: “We want to remind Minister Reilly of his own words in opposition in 2010 when he highlighted what was wrong with the HSE approach to cost-cutting. After attending a workshop last Saturday by U.S. Iraq war veteran Logan Mehl-Laituri at the Greenbelt Festival/ England, I was informed that Joshua Casteel was in a very bad way with the cancer with which he has been struggling. Its not just the WMD excuse that the Imperialists are using to advance their cause of War on Syria and the threat of war against Iran: the US et al are using the reactionary Sunni regimes and their co-thinkers throughout the Middle East and North Africa. Full text at link. In citing “weapons of mass destruction” as a pretext for waging war against Syria, the Obama administration is treading a well-worn path. When President Barack Obama threatened August 21 that the movement of chemical weapons inside Syria was a “red line” that could trigger US military intervention, he did nothing that was not pioneered by George W. Bush before the 2003 war against Iraq. Obama now has the backing of British Prime Minister David Cameron and, this week, France’s François Hollande.
