If you thought the inheritance tax raid on farmers was bad, wait till you see what its proponents have in store for us next, says Mat Brown. The Blob that gave us the 'tractor tax' has its sights set on a wealth tax.

Tariq Ali looks at the various "revolutions" in the Middle East and writes: The idea that the Saudis, Qatar, and Turkey backed by NATO are going to create a revolutionary democracy or even a democratic set-up is challenged by what is happening elsewhere in the Arab world. Full text at link.

Ever since the beginning of the Arab Spring there has been much talk of revolutions. Not from me. I’ve argued against the position that mass uprisings on their own constitute a revolution, i.e., a transfer of power from one social class (or even a layer) to another that leads to fundamental change. The actual size of the crowd is not a determinant—members of a crowd become a revolution only when they have, in their majority, a clear set of social and political aims. If they do not, they will always be outflanked by those who do, or by the state that will recapture lost ground very rapidly. read full story / add a comment

Ireland could and should have a Universal Pension for everyone over 65. it could be paid for principally by standard rating the current tax-break for private pensions. More than 80% of benefit of the current tax break goes to the 20% with highest earnings. A Universal Pension would be simpler, fairer and more just as well as being sustainable in the decades ahead.

No existing pensioner would lose out and many would experience an increase in the Universal Pension. In particular, those adults aged 66 years and older, in respect of whom reduced payments are now made due to their status as ‘Qualified Adults’, would receive a Universal Pension in their own right. read full story / add a comment

This talk by Dr. Vincent Durac aims to increase public awareness about the current
political and humanitarian crisis in Syria. Beginning in 2011 after the al-Assad
regime began a violent crackdown on protestors demanding greater economic and
political freedoms, the situation has become increasingly unstable and of
humanitarian concern. In 2013, Syria is on the brink of Western military
intervention further complicating the West's relationship with the Middle East.
The goal of this lecture is to increase public knowledge of this conflict and
therefore will be delivered in an accessible manner outlining the main points of the
current crisis. It aims to address the following questions: What is happening? Why
is it happening? Who is involved? What are the consequences of intervention? read full story / add a comment

On this anniversary of Sept 11th 1973 when a US backup coup took place that overthrew the democratically elected leader of Chile and replaced by the dictator Pinochet who proceeded to murder thousands of innocent people with full US backing and knowledge, Mint Press carry this report to reflect on the 40 years that have past and the search for justice.

Perhaps some people will remember the television pictures from the day after the coup, Sept 12th when things changed dramatically where thousands of people including teachers and students were taken to the Chile Stadium-over night pressed into service as a detention center - and many were subsequently attacked and killed.

"The Chile Stadium was no joke. We saw them kill people right in front of us, we saw how people went crazy from that terrible, tense situation. Torture is not only when the torturers are in front of you, abusing you directly, destroying you, but that atmosphere was also torture."

The British and Irish governments are facing fresh demands for a new inquiry into their police and intelligence agencies including the involvement of the FBI in the withholding vital information on the Omagh bombing. One of the most disturbing pieces of information to emerge refers to an e-mail sent between David Rupert and his MI5/FBI handlers which warned of a bomb attack in Omagh. read full story / add a comment

Unfortunately, it appears that Ireland has become increasingly more interested in hanging onto the shirt tails of the US than ever before, allowing agents from that country to work within the boundaries of this ‘state’ without adequate clearance. For years, this so called ‘neutral state’ has continuously been abused by the covert activities of the British Security Services and now we have additional interference by the US, impinging here at will. The rendition flights at Shannon are one typical example, another case in point was the involvement of US agents in the McKevitt trial in 2003, where it emerged that MI5 and the FBI were running an informer within the jurisdiction for up to a decade. read full story / add a comment

Remember all the months of U.S. frustration with Iran not laying down and rolling over—that is after all the one-sided demands by the United States that feels it never has to treat any country like an equal—save its constant kissing of AIPAC, NEOCON, and Israel’s asses nonstop? Well all the horseshit about precise, punitive strikes is a stratagem to settle the Middle East situation once and for all. “To swallow and follow, weather old doctrine or new propaganda, is a weakness still dominating the human mind.” William E. Gladstone

John Kerry now walks onto the graves of many, many to-soon-be-dead humans beings. He adamantly plays his well-crafted, seemingly rational justifications for more war; but his whole stage-craft of lies about knowing who is behind the chemical attacks, is a fraud of deceit as Biblical proportions. He is already a living corpse, a puppet for another Zionist-minted atrocity, similar to our Manchurian Candidate Barack Obama, both who lead this repeat of professional propaganda campaign, expecting the American public to swallow another pack of lies for another military and political fiasco (as if the U.S. can never learn from previous mistakes). Both have sold their souls to the devil of political push and shove.

A further 40,000 goldminers could join the strike in the coming days. Workers are demanding pay increases of between 60%-150% for workers earning around €400 per month. The mining bosses have offered increases of approximate 6.1% (just below the rate of inflation)

It’s now painfully clear that Obama’s war on Syria is a replay of Bush’s march to war in Iraq, both built on lies. Zero evidence has been put forth that proves the Syrian government used chemical weapons. On the contrary, evidence has been recorded that suggests the U.S.-backed Syrian rebels are responsible for the attack. read full story / add a comment

I have spent over 30 years working in journalism as a chief reporter and as news editor.

In May 2012 I suffered permanent damage to my eyesight following an assault. One year later, in May 2013, the Department of Social Protection awarded me a disability allowance on the basis of the hospital surgeon's medical report regarding my condition, backdated to the date of my injury in 2012. read full story / add a comment
