Licensed psychotherapist, author and publisher Carmel Sheridan knows that no matter where nurses live and work, they struggle with similar issues: compassion fatigue, depression, substance abuse, poor boundary setting, neglected self-care, and high stress levels. "I've lived in the U.S. and Ireland, and many of the participants in my stress-management groups are nurses spanning every specialty. Nurses have particularly high levels of stress and burnout." Often dubbed "the invisible patients," nurses endure emotionally grueling and physically draining shifts, often with little support.
Stress in nursing won't reduce until conditions improve. But in the meantime, mindfulness can help nurses prioritise their own self-care and wellbeing. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday 30th March, Dr Brendan K. O'Rourke, DIT, will deliver a talk entitled: 'The Economy and Public Discourse'.

How do we talk about the economy? To whom do we listen about the economy? In these times of austerity, Brexit and right-wing populism, these questions are crucial for those who value democracy and equality. Can we avail ourselves of expertise on the economy and at the same time avoid accepting elitist ideologies? How can we understand the role of the media in this process? This seminar overviews some of the discourse analytical research being done in this area. read full story / add a comment

The coup of 2016 double hit democracy in Brazil: it overthrew an honest president from power, without being able to point out against her rigorously no wrong attitude, thus trampling the constitution, which does not admit this alternative, and passing, in practice, the presidentialist regime to The parliamentarian, without consulting the population, a hypothesis that is also forbidden by the Magna Carta.

It is fundamental that democratic sectors outside Brazil, support the struggle of Brazilians for the return of democracy and presidentialism!

BRU TO ENGAGE IN ALL OUT INDEFINITE STRIKE FROM MONDAY 6TH MARCH

General Secretary Dermot O’Leary said:

“Bus Éireann Management are determined to steer a course towards conflict by issuing ultimatums to staff, before they have had the opportunity to digest, never mind analyse the detail contained in this latest missive. Placing an emphasis on, as it were, parking the race to the bottom agenda for now, and replacing it with broad sweeping generalisations under insider specific language, is obviously designed to create an impression that there has been a major shift in policy, away from raiding workers’ pay packets to plug the policy induced financial gap at Expressway.” read full story / add a comment
