This Sunday, 2 November at 1pm people from all over the West of Ireland will gather at Eyre Square, Galway to demonstrate their concern about the disastrous effects of climate change on the environment. The Galway Climate March will start in Eyre Square at 1pm on Sunday, 2 November and will travel as far as The Spanish Arch. Anyone interested in joining the march are encouraged to wear green and to bring banners, flags and signs promoting green, clean energy. read full story / add a comment

The anti-water charges campaign is a populist campaign driven by the opportunist politics of the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party and other organisations including the UNITE trade union. Sinn Fein I believe are rightly under attack for the issues around the Cahill case and the way they are said to have handled this. Abuse of women (and Men) exists in the revolutionary left also. When this comes up the leadership of these organizations usually try to cover this up by citing the supposed interests of the organization concerned and the revolution. This puts enormous pressure of the victims of assault and has to be condemned. read full story / add a comment

Radical Routes begin an all-island speaking tour at the end of this month to people to set up their own co-ops. They are presenting this as a way out of both the precarious rental market and the trap of long-term mortgage debt. The tour will draw on their experience where the Radical Routes network has over 35 member co-ops. They say that "While the legal and financial structures relevant to setting up a co-op are different in the UK and Ireland, the experience learned from establishing these projects in the UK is valuable to anyone in Ireland considering setting up a co-operative and taking control of their own housing situation." Single issue demands such as the movement against water rates hold back the class struggle by suggesting that capitalism can continue in the absence of these charges or taxes. Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival Guth Gafa (meaning ‘captive voice’) is Ireland’s only independent documentary film festival. We focus on showcasing the latest award-winning International and Irish documentary films on thought-provoking subjects, and promoting the art of great story-telling, through film, to rural Irish communities. The festival returns this year in not one, but two magical locations, in Counties Donegal and Meath. It will get underway on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday October 26th in the unspoilt 17th century village of Malin, Co Donegal, its spiritual home. The Judicial Review of the Minister of Justice’s refusal to grant Michael McKevitt enhanced remission was scheduled to commence this morning in Court 4 of the High Court. However, upon arrival at court McKevitt’s legal team was informed that his case was being removed from the immediate hearing list and being placed instead on the Administration List – with a new date yet to be scheduled. Michael McKevitt’s legal team protested that today’s date had been scheduled by a High Court judge before the summer break; that the case concerned the potential unlawful detention of a prisoner and a citizen’s deprivation of liberty, and that the case should be given priority and should commence as previously scheduled. read full story / add a comment |
