All welcome to our Financial Transaction Tax Working group meeting on Wednesday 11th November, 9.30 am Banks, hedge funds and the rest of the financial sector should pay their fair share to clear up the mess they helped create. The Financial Transaction Tax is a tax on banks that would give billions to tackle poverty and climate change - in Europe and abroad. It would be applied to trading in bonds, shares and derivatives. The European Commission is proposing a tax of 0.1% on trading in bonds and shares and 0.01% on trading in derivatives. Eleven Member States are working to implement this tax under the EU ‘enhanced cooperation procedure’. France, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Germany are among them but Ireland and Britain have stood outside the group. Michael Noonan is saying no to its introduction Interested? Over the years there have been regular movements of US military refuelling planes through Shannon. The government won't tell us why they land there however. Are they refuelling US military planes just outside Irish airspace? Are they collecting cheap fuel? Are they on their way to warzones to re-fuel fighter jets? read full story / add a comment

Changing US explanations following the October 3 Kunduz hospital attack were all lies – willful deception, covering up a deliberate attack on a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) facility. Pentagon officials knew it was a hospital, yet attacked it anyway – multiple times for over an hour, killing 24 doctors, other medical staff and patients, injuring 37 others. Make no mistake! This was a deliberately planned war crime. An AP report said “US analysts knew (the) Afghan site was (a) hospital.” read full story / add a comment

The horrendous double bombing attack that struck a protest rally for peace organized by several trade unions in Ankara, Turkey’s capital city, on Saturday 10 October, led, at the last count, to at least 128 deaths, and hundreds injured. It is the largest terrorist attack in the country’s history. Many victims are still in intensive care units in various hospitals, while a number of bodies, unrecognizable, have not yet been identified. This attack, by its human and political magnitude, has shaken the country to its foundations. read full story / add a comment

We hope our contributors and readers will return and continue to make use of Indymedia for it's intended purpose of posting news, reports and events by the public and activist communities. read full story / add a comment

national / bin tax / household tax / water tax / photo-essay Wednesday September 02, 2015 23:32 by T 15 images
The Right2Water campaign had called for a national demonstration on Sat Aug 31st and quite a lot of effort had gone into publishing this with tens of thousands of leaflets distributed throughout the country and buses laid on to many of the major towns. There was a fair bit riding on this because figures show that significant percentage of households had still not paid and during the summer the government plans were upset when EuroStat came back and said Irish Water had to appear on the government accounts. In the meantime government ministers have been claiming it would not be privatized but when pressed on whether this is rock solid, they turn out to be quite slippy on this. And there is reason for this because the TTIP treaty between the USA and EU currently being negotiated in secret is a corporate wishlist that will allow corporations to sue governments through the Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) which are corporate courts run by corporate lawyers and take precedence over national laws and there is no right of appeal. It will allow corporations to say that it is unfair competition to have things like our health, education and of course Irish Water in state hands and therefore it should be privatized. This is not some myth because the ISDS mechanism has already been used at least 500 times in other countries for basically lowering health standards and environmental protection. If TTIP is passed and so far Fine Gael have been in favour of it, including the ISDS, then they will say their hands are tied and they had to privatize Irish Water and of course every other thing. read full story / add a comment
