The destruction of Kilkieran Bay and Bertraghboy Bay by our state. Nine new cages for Kilkieran Bay and 5or 6 for Bertraghboy Bay in Connemara and more to be added. You could practically walk to them from the shore and this is an SAC and SPA. Again economically supported by Udaras na Gaeltachta and now run by a multinational salmon feed lot operator. Replacing salmon farms that never worked and got huge funding from Udaras na Gaeltachta in the past and this is a SPECIAL AREA OF CONSERVATION. It is a total disgrace. read full story / add a comment

Dear Friends, Just a little note to bring to your attention our exhibition “And They Tell Me" a memorial to all the women who have died through male violence from December 1995 to 2013. This is a very powerful and simple exhibition, really beautiful but also very shocking. It is only a short window in time to view this work. We invite you and your groups to come to the NCAD Gallery, Thomas Street to view it and connect with the issue of Violence Against Women. For those who are interested we are also holding a conference to reflect on the invisible crisis. There are only 100 places for the conference so you must book, it is also free. I really hope you will get to one or the other and I hope your own work is going well. In solidarity Rita Fagan read full story / add a comment

The couple accused in the case of alleged “domestic slavery” in London were reportedly the leaders of a tiny Maoist sect, the Workers’ Institute of Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought, which had gone “underground” in the late 1970s. To understand how the Workers’ Institute ended up so far off the radar, we need to understand where they came from – the strange world of radical Maoist politics in 1970s London. read full story / add a comment

We've been in Dublin since Wednesday with Welsh members of Chelsea Manning's family http://manningfamilyfund.org/2013/11/27/rocky-road-to-d...blin/ enjoying warm and enthusiastic Irish hospitality from AFRI and many others during three days of solidarity events, meetings, meals and media interviews. There are Irish connections on both sides of Chelsea's family: maternal grandfather from Rathmines, Dublin and one set of paternal great grandparents (both Mannings) from a village in Cork. Chelsea was flown out to Iraq via Shannon airport, the use of which by the US military compromises Ireland's supposed neutrality. There will be more to report back later, but for now here are a few photos from the visit. More photos and info here: http://manningfamilyfund.org/2013/12/01/a-photo-report-...ings/ read full story / add a comment |
