Policing for the G20 summit in Brisbane this past weekend was of overkill proportions. There was very little in the way of serious resistance, the Guardian reported that cops (6,000) outnumbered protesters and only 14 arrests were made. One of these was Irish-Australian Manning and Assange solidarity and anti-war activist Ciaron O'Reilly, who has been held in custody all weekend and will be brought before Brisbane Magistrates on Monday morning. read full story / add a comment

This is a repost of an important article on the Irish Left Review website and goes into detail on the connection between the Water Charges and the upcoming Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is currently being concluded in secret by the EU and US.

*** The water charges can and must be defeated by resistance and non-payment but water, as a human right, must also be secured as a publicly owned and controlled resource universally available. Remember, we had to fight water charges in the 1980’s and again in the 1990’s so let’s make this win a permanent one. read full story / add a comment

This programme of short artist’s film works looks at Palestine from various perspectives – external, embedded and provocative. Each of the filmmakers go beyond mainstream media representations of Palestine to interrogate the emotional and political landscape through uncanny juxtaposition of image and text. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion about film media and the current situation in Palestine including Laurence Davis (Dept of Government UCC), Rola Abu Zeid O’Neill (Dept of Sociology UCC), Harry Browne (School of Media DIT). Curated and chaired by artist/filmmaker Aoife Desmond. read full story / add a comment

Big man protects little woman - Enda Kenny and Mairia Cahill (Irish Times front page 23 October 2014)

A response to Miriam Lord in the Irish Times 23 October 2014:
http://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/oireachtas/this...73438

The big man protecting the little woman. That explains the sexist picture dominating the Irish Times front page on 23 October, of Taoiseach Enda Kenny looking out for Mairia Cahill.

In our patriarchal society men hold the material and physical upper hand. Women often fight back with emotional and psychological weapons. These are being exploited in this fight, but not by men on the one side and women on the other, but by men and women on both sides.

The spouse of First Minister Peter Robinson, Iris, was in an exploitative relationship with a younger man. He is forgotten (I forget his face and name), while Mrs Robinson was publicly rehabilitated by President Mary McAleese and the Queen of England at a live televised public event in Dublin. She received therapy and expiated her sins, while he was left to his own devices. Who cares, f**k him. read full story / add a comment

Over 100 separate local demonstrations took place today (Sat Nov 1st) against the Water Charges and for the Right 2 Water. Organisers estimate conservatively that over 150,000 were out on the streets today to send a message to this government that they won't accept paying for water twice and having it privatised later.

People realize that all the false promises and allowances will eventually be dropped and the long term result will be that a privatised water company will prey on the people with massive hikes in charges and big fat bonuses for themselves.

There were protests from Cork & Kerry to Wexford to Dublin to Limerick to Galway to Sligo to Donegal to Cavan to Dundalk and all over the Midlands. There has never been anything like it perhaps since the foundation of the state. The people are truly fed up and are determined and will not be abused by the political technocrats of big Capital that is robbing every social gain our forebears fought hard to get over the past century. read full story / add a comment

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will drive renewal in Europe by supporting renewed growth rates of 1.5% with a boost in economic activity worth €800M! That’s one narrative, the other is that TTIP will undermine our democracy while driving environmental and food safety standards downwards and undermine progress for climate justice. Is it possible that it will do both?

This process has the potential to be a major game-changer for the coming decades, who will benefit, will there be losers and how will all this impact on us in both the Global North and Global South?

Come and join the discussion at the Comhlámh at the #firstweddebates read full story / add a comment
