Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has secured a fourth term in office after defeating Henrique Capriles. There was a turnout of 81% with Chavez securing 54.66% to Capriles' 44.73%..While this was comfortable victory margin it was down from the 27 point lead in 2006. Recognising this Chavez praised the opposition for recognising the election result, and said he was "stretching out my hands and heart on our behalf because we are brothers in Bolivar's homeland".

Chavez addressed his supporters from the balcony of the presidential palace and said: "Truthfully, this has been the perfect battle, a democratic battle. Venezuela will continue its march toward the democratic socialism of the 21st Century. I promise you I'll be a better president." read full story / add a comment

The first large-scale study to explore surgical outcomes across Europe has found that Irish patients have the highest risk of dying in Western Europe and the fourth-worst mortality rate among 28 European countries. Ireland is placed behind Poland, Latvia and Romania in the overall mortality table, published in a recent issue of the Lancet (2012;380:1059-65), but is worse off than Slovakia or Croatia. read full story / add a comment

Dublin’s ‘Open House’ architectural festival has shamefully lent its name to an event sponsored by the Israeli Embassy in Ireland. This event, entitled ‘Postcards of our City’ is due to be launched on at 6.30pm Thursday 4th October in Dublin Civic Trust (4 Castle St, Dublin 2), is the latest attempt by the Israeli state to use ‘cultural propaganda’ to whitewash its human rights abuses and war crimes against the Palestinian people. Those attending will be invited by the Israeli Embassy to send postcards to “random” residents of Tel Aviv. read full story / add a comment

After Roisin Shortall's departure yesterday from Government with little or no support from her so called Labour colleagues, Roisin must wonder today, if she too is a prisoner of the island of Lilliput. Despite Ms Shortall's principled resignation, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny, his Labour Tanaiste Eamonn Gilmore and other so called former Labour comrades, all leapt instead to the defence of super capitalist Health Minister Dr James Reilly or perhaps more accurately, to the defence of their luxurious ministerial salaries, from the little Irish taxpayers. Then of course the Fine Gael Minister has always made no secret of his hatred for the short all, little people of Lilliputian Ireland. read full story / add a comment

From The Irish Times , September 24 2012

Twelve months ago I gave a presentation on the subject of youth drug and alcohol abuse to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children. I highlighted the huge pressures facing Ireland’s youth, including peer pressure, bullying, unemployment and emigration, all within a national atmosphere of despair over our collective future. I focused on the widespread culture of binge drinking in Ireland, which appears to be often ignored, accepted or normalised by many parents, publicans, politicians and law enforcers.

Around a thousand marched on Saturday in Dublin on the 16th to demand the freeing of Marian Price, currently 18 months in in solitary confinement in British custody in the Six Counties. Tensions were high due to the recent Gardaí raids on republicans in parts of Dublin and Louth, including the arrests of the mother and two brother of a republican. In addition a heavy Garda presence at the start of the march, along with their taking names and addressses of some marchers, boded ill for the event. However, it passed peacefully.

The marchers, led by the banner of the Dublin Free Marian Price Commitee, started from the Garden of Remembrance and as the lead banner and the Pride of Erin flute band from Portadown stepped on to O’Connell Bridge, the end of the march was just setting foot on to the far end of O’Connell Street.

Irish writer Brendan Behan said that “other people have a nationality; the Irish and Jews have a psychosis”. The Neo-colonial free state and British Occupied Ireland are both run by liars telling obvious lies, still worse, almost everyone in Ireland chooses to believe them Israel too has similar problems with choosing corrupt leaders like Ireland. Bottom line this is insane and this form of insanity can best be summarized, as telling oneself lies and insanely choosing consciously to believe them. Perhaps, it was developed for survival in the face of the holocaust or abject adversity but both communities experienced it.The results today are Government liars portrayed in the heavily censored west-brit Irish media, as either behemoth buffoons like former Taoiseach Brian Cowen or as Blue blooded imported Brit leaders, above scrutiny or reproach, such as the contemporary Viceroyal Villiers.

The 28th September 2012 will be the centenary of the Ulster Solemn League and Covenant against Home Rule.

Far less well known is the ‘Alternative Ulster Covenant’, signed in October 1913 by some twelve thousand Protestants from County Antrim in support of Home Rule and against partition.

The Alternative Covenant was written by Rev JB Armour and Roger Casement.

A Public Talk on the Alternative Covenant will be held on 3rd October in the Belvedere Hotel, Denmark Street, Dublin, at 7pm. Speakers to include Rev David Frazer and Bill O'Brien. All Welcome. (See http://www.indymedia.ie/article/102491 )

A historical pamphlet discussing not only the Alternative Covenant but also what James Connolly predicted would be a ‘carnival of reaction’, north and south, will be launched on the night. read full story / add a comment
