Labour plans to shoehorn climate alarmism into every subject on the school syllabus. This indoctrination in dubious official 'science' is grimly reminiscent of the Soviet Union, says Steven Tucker.

Big man protects little woman - Enda Kenny and Mairia Cahill (Irish Times front page 23 October 2014)

A response to Miriam Lord in the Irish Times 23 October 2014:
http://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/oireachtas/this...73438

The big man protecting the little woman. That explains the sexist picture dominating the Irish Times front page on 23 October, of Taoiseach Enda Kenny looking out for Mairia Cahill.

In our patriarchal society men hold the material and physical upper hand. Women often fight back with emotional and psychological weapons. These are being exploited in this fight, but not by men on the one side and women on the other, but by men and women on both sides.

The spouse of First Minister Peter Robinson, Iris, was in an exploitative relationship with a younger man. He is forgotten (I forget his face and name), while Mrs Robinson was publicly rehabilitated by President Mary McAleese and the Queen of England at a live televised public event in Dublin. She received therapy and expiated her sins, while he was left to his own devices. Who cares, f**k him. read full story / add a comment

Over 100 separate local demonstrations took place today (Sat Nov 1st) against the Water Charges and for the Right 2 Water. Organisers estimate conservatively that over 150,000 were out on the streets today to send a message to this government that they won't accept paying for water twice and having it privatised later.

People realize that all the false promises and allowances will eventually be dropped and the long term result will be that a privatised water company will prey on the people with massive hikes in charges and big fat bonuses for themselves.

There were protests from Cork & Kerry to Wexford to Dublin to Limerick to Galway to Sligo to Donegal to Cavan to Dundalk and all over the Midlands. There has never been anything like it perhaps since the foundation of the state. The people are truly fed up and are determined and will not be abused by the political technocrats of big Capital that is robbing every social gain our forebears fought hard to get over the past century. read full story / add a comment

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will drive renewal in Europe by supporting renewed growth rates of 1.5% with a boost in economic activity worth €800M! That’s one narrative, the other is that TTIP will undermine our democracy while driving environmental and food safety standards downwards and undermine progress for climate justice. Is it possible that it will do both?

This process has the potential to be a major game-changer for the coming decades, who will benefit, will there be losers and how will all this impact on us in both the Global North and Global South?

Five years ago, the Irish Anarchist Review replaced Red and Black Revolution as the magazine of the Workers Solidarity Movement. It’s mission was to fill a vacuum in Irish radical circles, to be a publication that raised questions and provoked debate, rather than laying out blueprints for success, as had been the norm in the more theoretical work of the left. It was established at a time where a fightback was believed to be imminent, when the expectation was that as the (economic) beatings continued, morale would improve. read full story / add a comment

Sat Nov 1st is going to be a Right2Water National Day of Local Protests from 12am onwards

The Right2Water campaign is helping to coordinate dozens of local demonstrations across Ireland, all due to take place on November 1st.

Following on from one of the largest national demonstrations in Irish history, the Right2Water campaign says it will continue to build a mass movement of opposition to water charges.

The campaign – which involves trade unions, political parties and community groups – believes people are angry and unified in their opposition to these unfair charges.

The campaign is asking all anti-water charges groups – including political parties – to unify and work together to ensure as large a demonstration as possible in their home towns and cities. read full story / add a comment

Radical Routes begin an all-island speaking tour at the end of this month to people to set up their own co-ops. They are presenting this as a way out of both the precarious rental market and the trap of long-term mortgage debt.

The tour will draw on their experience where the Radical Routes network has over 35 member co-ops. They say that "While the legal and financial structures relevant to setting up a co-op are different in the UK and Ireland, the experience learned from establishing these projects in the UK is valuable to anyone in Ireland considering setting up a co-operative and taking control of their own housing situation."
