This is the memoir of an Ordinary Person. A memoir that: spans from December 2006 to May 2011; describes the author's struggle against an "alleged" constructive dismissal by one of Ireland's leading law firms; tells of the author's challenge to the Employment Appeals Tribunal to remain impartial; outlines the author's application to the Legal Aid Board to provide assistance; questions the validity of the Courts' Customer Service Strategic Plan, the internal systems and the treatment of people who cannot afford legal counsel; and gives an account of the author's challenge to the Law Courts when she self-represented agains the Firm. It is the story of a system that is protected by self-regulation and the separation of powers and which has thrived because of the unwritten Code of Practice. It is the story of The Judiciary - An Ordinary Person's Perspective. read full story / add a comment

"Disarmament, Development, Democracy: Joining the Dots" As our globalised world gets smaller, so the burning issues we are confronted with seem to overlap to a greater and greater extent. How to solve the challenge of poverty without re-allocating some of the huge sums devoted to militarism? How to ensure a stable future for our economies and our societies without taking into account the massive impacts of climate change and resource depletion? How to redeem the promise of a new democratic order in the Middle East and North Africa without ensuring true gender justice? And how can we achieve any of these things without a full, inclusive, transparent democracy? These are some of the issues we will tackle in the Dublin Dialogue. With contributions from two women heroes of the Arab Spring -- Nawal El Sadaawi (Egypt) and Lina Ben Mhenni (Tunisia), together with music and tree planting. read full story / add a comment

A horrifying amateur video from Syria emerged online, showing an apparent mass execution of Assad supporters in Aleppo at the hands of rebels from the Free Syria Army. The footage shows several bloodied men stripped down to their underwear being forced to kneel by a wall amidst a throng of excited, machine gun-touting men. Once their captors open fire, the camera jerks away as the crowd momentarily disperses, seemingly unprepared for the nearly 40 seconds of uninterrupted shooting that follows. As the gunfire dies down, shouts of “Allahu Akbar!” resound as the once skittish onlookers victoriously raise their guns in the air, approaching what appears to be a pile of stripped-down corpses. read full story / add a comment

Britain has a shameful track record of exporting arms, along with crowd control equipment, to torture regimes in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. These arms, equipment, counter insurgency techniques, are to be tested again in the laboratory of British Occupied Ireland, something that came to halt during the peace process. Britain cannot claim to be on the side of peace and democracy while their Tory PM, sponsored in the last election by Britain's industrial war complex, acts as a travelling salesman for the arms industry. Sponsored too it appears, are certain elements of Britain's secret services who are responsible for ending the peace process in Ireland. read full story / add a comment
