On the weekend of 23-25 January, Irish actors, musicians and activists descended on Wales for a weekend of solidarity with WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning (formerly known as Bradley Manning) and her family. The first Truthfest in January 2014 was the brainchild of Irish actor and activist Donal O'Kelly, an idea hatched after he met members of Manning's family during a visit to Dublin organised by Irish Australian activist Ciaron O'Reilly in collaboration with Afri (Action from Ireland) in November 2013. The links forged during that visit have been maintained and strengthened through a series of exchange visits since that time, most recently this 2nd Manning Truthfest. Ciaron O'Reilly was one of five Pitstop Ploughshares activists who disabled a US Navy war plane at Shannon airport in 2003. The WSM have written the following article which neatly sums up the various things happening in the news today and brings them together. This morning squads of Garda around Dublin mounted dawn raids on the houses of water charges protesters over a sit in 3 months ago in Jobstown. At the same time across the city bankers and other speculators named in the HSBC Geneva Private Bank leaks slept soundly in their beds knowing no one was going to be knocking down their door. If you want to understand the nature of power the contrast provides an excellent example. read full story / add a comment

Speaking of this mornings events Joe Higgins TD who has been in the process of visiting the various Garda stations where the public representatives are being held said: “The arrests of AAA TD Paul Murphy, councillors Kieran Mahon and Mick Murphy and a fourth person who remains to be identified to us as we go to press is a cheap attempt to denigrate and weaken water charges movement as we approach make or break time – bills coming out and need for mass non-payment. read full story / add a comment

After the relatively large turn-out to the Anti-Water charges protests over a week ago on Saturday the 31st, the government is worried that their propaganda hasn't worked as well as it should so in response they have launched a new dirty tricks campaign to discredit the Anti-Water charges campaign. They are using the same strategy as that used in the Corrib Gas issue in Mayo over the past decade where the strategy was to criminalise the protests in the eyes of the public. read full story / add a comment

Press Release - Feb 1st - The Irish Government and media appear to be in a panic about two Russian TU-95 bomber aircraft that flew down the west coast of Ireland at least 50 miles out to sea, and not through Irish sovereign airspace. A statement issued by the Irish Department of Defence said "non-controlled and non-notified flight activity by Russian aircraft is not acceptable". This same Department of Defence of a supposedly neutral Irish state has issued no such statements about the transit of almost two and half million US troops through Shannon airport since 2001, and provides Irish soldiers to guard US military aircraft at Shannon. read full story / add a comment

The WSM have written a timely article covering the recent sickening spectacle of the mainstream media expressing their moral outrage at a recent protest against the President after he signed into law another batch of laws to serve corporate interests and steal away the resources which belong to the Irish people, but they did not express any moral outrage over any of the austerity measures of the past 7 years which has resulted in people losing their homes, going without, committing suicide, dying for lack of proper care and treatments and waiting lists and the general misery inflicted upon the population. No, it is simply an opportunity to viciously attack and condemn anyone who dares challenge the ideology that everything must be sold off and run for profit and screw peoples needs and lives. read full story / add a comment

There was large turnout at Saturday's Water Charges protest which the government probably hoped would be smaller but what Saturday shows is that the campaign is very much still alive and there plans for a bigger national march in a few weeks time. The protest was organised by each of the local campaigns and the plan was for each of the different groups to meet and converge in the centre of Dublin. Those from Dublin West met up at Hueston station marched down the quays to link up with people from Dublin at O'Connell bridge. Meanwhile people from North Dublin met at Connolly and also converged at O'Connell bridge. read full story / add a comment

Community Groups around Ireland will protest in towns, cities and villages across Ireland about the water charges on Saturday 31 January. Seek them out and join them!
The Dublin local groups are planning to all meet up in the City Centre,
Please join the protests and keep the pressure up. The temporary lower charges introduced by the government will be withdrawn after the next election and all waivers and allowances will be abolished if they privatise Irish Water which IS their plan. They later plan to charge for waste water! This is on the cards. We must stop abolish these charges and stop this disgraceful act. read full story / add a comment

After 14 years of challenging the oil and gas industry in north Mayo, what knowledge does the community there have to share? What questions might other communities have and how might they benefit from the experiences of those standing up to Shell and the State? A four-year research project (2010-2014) in the parish of Kilcommon, northwest Mayo, sought to identify and share useful knowledge from the experiences of challenging the Corrib Gas project. This has been used to create an exhibition in which people respond to the question: If you could say one thing to other communities facing an unsafe development planned for their area, what would it be? read full story / add a comment

K-Tech Security are heavily involved in the forceful evictions of families from their family home. Having previously assured concerned citizens they would desist from this immoral practice they have reneged and are presently trying to evict a family from their land. We are calling on the City West Hotel to no longer use K Tech for the Irish Country Music Awards on Monday, January 26th as part of a wider national campaign of calling for boycotts of K Tech Security. read full story / add a comment
