The Arab Spring has morphed into Islamic Winter in Tunisia. Full text at link.

A leading member of Tunisia’s opposition was shot dead on Wednesday morning as he was leaving his house in the capital Tunis. Chokri Belaid, who was secretary general of the leftist Democratic Patriotic Party, was shot in the head and neck and died as he was taken to hospital. A leading voice of secular opposition in Tunisia, he was also a harsh critic of the Islamists who have come to dominate Tunisian politics since the country’s revolution in early 2011. read full story / add a comment

Re- THE BAN BY DUNNES STORES ON ANIMAL CHARITY COLLECTORS.
……POSSIBLY A REASON FOR THE 'CHARITY COLLECTORS 'STOPPAGE BY DUNNES STORES
ARE BLOODSPORTS PEOPLE REALLY THIS NASTY???

We refer to the ban by the Dunnes Store’s chain on allowing Animal charities to collect at their many shops.
This has shocked many welfare groups as no explanation has be given despite radio and newspaper coverage.

We were informed yesterday by a posting on the PRO RACING and COURSING forum GREYHOUND NUTS that the once vocal Pro stag- hunting group Rise [rural Ireland says Enough]were behind the ban by Dunnes Stores. We enclose the page from the blog below which is run by Tom Brett of Cork.

Unfortunately as Dunnes Stores will not answer questions put to them we cannot verify this revelation. We invite you to investigate further in an effort to explain the strange ‘less than compassionate ‘ stance that they have adopted.

AFAR feels to alienate any worthwhile cause without explanation is unjust. read full story / add a comment

international / environment / news report Thursday January 31, 2013 18:28 by Emilio José Lemos de Lima   image 2 images
In this process truly poetic rather than scientific, in which consortia of species succeed in building an environment increasingly rich and varied, every plant, every animal, every micro-organism has its contributory role, being the man for the first time in history, leaving his sad protagonist role of stingy tormentor of nature and life and move creatively to assume the coordination of the construction process.
Throughout the process disappears the necessity of introducing the classic Fordist agriculture inputs: the live system produces himself the nutrients needed, regardless of chemical fertilizer, all seeds and seedlings can now be obtained locally, are not required the pesticides, pests are controlled by the multiplicity of species that evolve together, there is no monoculture, there is work, activity, harvesting, planting and management throughout the year. read full story / add a comment

SWP crisis: Professor Callinicos and the dark side
Finally a member of the SWP central committee attempts to defend its conduct. Paul Demarty wishes he hadn’t bothered

By the time you read this, it will be the 11th hour - the eve of the bureaucratically imposed deadline for conference recall motions in the Socialist Workers Party, a diktat which has no basis even in the SWP’s abortion of a constitution.
