national / economics and finance / press release Thursday February 25, 2016 23:04 by pbp   image 1 image
The Sunday Business Post ran a story claiming that vulture funds who bought up the loan books of Irish financial institutions are likely to step up pressure for payment after the general election.

The report in the Sunday Business Post is a terrible warning of what is to come. Far from years where we enjoy a new ‘fiscal space’ there is more economic turmoil ahead.

US vulture funds were encouraged to come into this country to buy up debt at incredibly low prices. The debts of both mortgage holders and small business enterprises became another opportunity for profit making. read full story / add a comment

The election cycle has come around yet again it is time to take a look at some of the issues being discussed and more importantly those not discussed and have a quick look at the economy.

For this election there are more independents going up than ever before, although people should be warned that a certain fraction of them are closet FFers and FGers so if it is change you are looking for, they may not be the candidates to vote for. Sometimes people seemed to assume Independents tend to be more to the Left. There is no inherent reason this should be the case and statistically one would expect them to evenly spread to the Left and Right. So if voting for an Independent then be sure you have checked what they really stand for and their previous record if any. read full story / add a comment

Monday 22nd February, 2016 – Ahead of the 12th round of TTIP negotiations, 280 civil society organisations from across Europe, with the support of US and Canadian groups, have called on the European Commission and the United States Trade Representative to eliminate the Investor State Dispute Mechanism (ISDS) and its so-called replacement, the Investor Court System (ICS), from the TTIP, CETA and all other trade agreements. The issue comes back to the negotiating table after a two-year impasse. read full story / add a comment

ISIS's flag - flying by now over Damascus if Russia had not intervened
international / anti-war / imperialism / other press Thursday February 18, 2016 23:13 by 1 of Indymedia   image 1 image
We are reproducing this article which is based on a report from London Evening Standard where the Russiam ambassador to UK reveals the Russians were told by the Western powers back in early summer of 2015 that after the US proclaimed a no-fly zone ISIS would capture Damascus by October 2015.

The importance of this article and revelation hardly mentioned in the mainstream media is how the planned actions of the USA would have directly supported the progress of ISIS and lead to further mass deaths. This is in addition to the direct involvement they already have in training and arming them through their proxies of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Indeed the recent huge wave of refugees into Europe are all from countries previously attacked or destablized by US policies. read full story / add a comment

'Another Ireland is Possible', but we have to fight for it. We have a Right2Water, a Right2Health, a Right2Education, a Right2Housing and we deserve a country that's not based on cronyism, corruption or greed, but instead one based on equality, democracy and social justice. read full story / add a comment

The undemocratic anti people TTIP agreement between EU-USA has it's counter part in the Pacific region and it is called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) which is equally as bad. The purpose of the two agreements is to permanently push back democracy and sovereign rights of peoples of huge areas of the world. It is the ultimate global corporate power grab.

Regrettably the TPP was signed by representatives from 12 countries on Feb 4th and on the same day tens of thousands of people protested throughout New Zealand against the formal signing. The signing follows years of secret negotiations between the US, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

Approximately 20,000 people marched through Queen Street and thousands rallied outside the SkyCity Casino in Auckland where the deal was signed. Protesters held placards and chanted slogans denouncing the TPP as a power-grab by US-based multinational corporations. read full story / add a comment

Forget the official Banking Inquiry report because Joe Higgins has written a much more better one and it asks the rights questions and gets to the heart of the matter by putting the whole saga in its proper context -something which the official report couldn't thing as it would mean asking fundamental questions. Indeed the inquriy itself and official report have been steeped in controversary with allegations of coverup because of numerous reports of key officials and whistleblowers in the regulator office and central bank were ignored and their evidence never making into the inquiry. The whistleblower made a formal complaint under the Protected Disclosures Act and (Village Magazine) "outlining a range of detailed concerns about how the Central Bank and some of its legal representatives were omitting huge swathes of vital documents, redacting many of the most crucial pieces of evidence, and delaying release of vital material until it was too late to use them in briefings for public hearings – in at least one case handing them over 24 hours before a scheduled interview about them." read full story / add a comment

If there was ever a way to discourage recycling it is to charge for it. But there is more to this story. Way back during the Bin Tax campaign it was said that the original plan was to charge for recycling and all along the plan was to send most of the recycling material like paper, cardboard and plastic to feed the huge incinerator then planned for Dublin.

This €600 million incinerator is now being built after it was forced on the people of Dublin by the former chairman of Dublin City Council John Tierney in the most undemocratic and secretive way and completely against all the councillors. This incinerator needs to be fed huge amounts of burnable material to keep it 'profitable'. It was sized for 600,000 tonnes which is more than all waste from Dublin. Tierney of course signed a lucrative deal with the incinerator operators Covanta whereby the council will make up the gap financially if they don't get enough material to feed into the monster. Now the dots have joined up and we can be sure that this announcement to start charging for recycling in July 2016 is very much connected with this since the incinerator will start operating early in 2017.
