I'm reproducing this post here because I think it needs wider circulation. I hope the original poster will forgive my boldness but It is an important message that should get out to the widest possible audience. Basically, under instruction from the EU, we will be giving private investors the interest on 28 billion of bank debt instead of paying it back to the Irish central bank as is currently the case, all with barely a murmur from the Irish media. Meanwhile the distraction storm rages on over a piddling 280 million which MIGHT be repaid to junior bond holders some of which MAY actually be local credit unions etc who are very beneficial to our economy. Furthermore If interest rates rise in the future we WILL be crucified by huge wasted interest repayments to greedy vulture capitalists. Meanwhile the media have us pissing and moaning over a hypothetical 280 million which MIGHT be repaid mainly to the likes of our own credit unions which will be peanuts compared to these other interest payments most likely going to foreign vulture capitalists read full story / add a comment

In the face of massive opposition to the water charges, the government have made several clumsy attempts to placate us, while their partners in the media seek to frighten us off the streets. This article examines the Transatlantic Free Trade agreement and it's potential repercussions.
In 2010 the US mining and gas company, Renco, managed to successfully avoid having to pay compensation to Peruvian locals who were harmed due to pollution by their companies by successfully using a provision of the Peru-US Trade Agreement[1]. Not satisfied with avoiding having to pay compensation, the company has since demanded $800 million from the Peruvian government as they argue that one of the companies they own, Doe Run, was forced into bankruptcy due to an expensive pollution clean-up which the Peruvian government required Doe Run to conduct [2]. read full story / add a comment

Policing for the G20 summit in Brisbane this past weekend was of overkill proportions. There was very little in the way of serious resistance, the Guardian reported that cops (6,000) outnumbered protesters and only 14 arrests were made. One of these was Irish-Australian Manning and Assange solidarity and anti-war activist Ciaron O'Reilly, who has been held in custody all weekend and will be brought before Brisbane Magistrates on Monday morning. read full story / add a comment

This is a repost of an important article on the Irish Left Review website and goes into detail on the connection between the Water Charges and the upcoming Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is currently being concluded in secret by the EU and US. *** The water charges can and must be defeated by resistance and non-payment but water, as a human right, must also be secured as a publicly owned and controlled resource universally available. The next major Right2Water event is a National Assembly outside the Dail on International Human Rights Day. This will take place on Wednesday, 10th December 2014 at 1pm. We will reaffirm our demand that water is recognised as a human right and that the Irish government abolish domestic water charges. Please spread the word.. That explains the sexist picture dominating the Irish Times front page on 23 October, of Taoiseach Enda Kenny looking out for Mairia Cahill. In our patriarchal society men hold the material and physical upper hand. Women often fight back with emotional and psychological weapons. These are being exploited in this fight, but not by men on the one side and women on the other, but by men and women on both sides. The spouse of First Minister Peter Robinson, Iris, was in an exploitative relationship with a younger man. He is forgotten (I forget his face and name), while Mrs Robinson was publicly rehabilitated by President Mary McAleese and the Queen of England at a live televised public event in Dublin. Over 100 separate local demonstrations took place today (Sat Nov 1st) against the Water Charges and for the Right 2 Water. Organisers estimate conservatively that over 150,000 were out on the streets today to send a message to this government that they won't accept paying for water twice and having it privatised later. People realize that all the false promises and allowances will eventually be dropped and the long term result will be that a privatised water company will prey on the people with massive hikes in charges and big fat bonuses for themselves. There were protests from Cork & Kerry to Wexford to Dublin to Limerick to Galway to Sligo to Donegal to Cavan to Dundalk and all over the Midlands. There has never been anything like it perhaps since the foundation of the state. The people are truly fed up and are determined and will not be abused by the political technocrats of big Capital that is robbing every social gain our forebears fought hard to get over the past century. read full story / add a comment |
