The government is planning to sell off our national forests which are currently owned by Coillte. The plan would be
to sell harvesting rights on 500,000 acres out of 1.2 million that they manage. They claim it is worth €700 million
although in the Peter Bacon report on Forestry, he puts the true value at €360 million or the equivalent of 3 days of
government expenditure. Bacon said: "economic rationale for the proposed sale of harvesting rights no longer stands up and cannot be justified." and that he further concluded it would actually cost the state €1,300 million to sell the harvesting rights of Coillte due to various liabilities. The report says that the forests should be developed further as a public resource. read full story / add a comment

Few things are more dangerous to a nation’s citizenry than when its leaders decide to turn on their own or selected groupings of their own people (and Jewish people should especially understand this). Tyrannical governments should be feared far more than various types of weapons—especially when tyrants have no or few restrictions on their own selection of weapons. The progressive idea of the 2nd Amendment was the notion that common people can have the right to defend themselves against tyrannical governments (including and especially when their own choose to turn on them—which has happened all throughout history). THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND ITS CURRENT DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH ISRAEL DOES NOT WARRANT TRUST ENOUGH FOR THE AMERICAN CITIZENRY TO HANDOVER GUNS TO THIS CORRUPTED STATUS QUO. read full story / add a comment

Norman Paech, a prominent member of the German left party, Die Linke, has joined others in withdrawing his support for the Iran Tribunal after approaches from supporters of Hands Off the People of Iran, reports Tina Becker. This is an edited version of an article recently published on the website of the German magazine Hintergrund1 The Iran Tribunal continues to divide the Iranian left. Yassamine Mather’s articles in the Weekly Worker have been hotly debated in Iran, across Europe and the United States. Since she started to expose the links of the organisers to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a number of organisations and individuals have withdrawn their support. Other groups and parties have split over the issue. It is therefore timely to take a closer look at the tribunal, its gestation, its corruption - and the fallout from Hopi’s scathing criticism. read full story / add a comment

Another thread speculated that recent attacks on RTE by the Sunday Independent were due to a generalised attack on the public sector, on relatively independent journalism in the publicly owned RTE during a period of recession, on disappointment at the election of Michael D Higgins and defeat for the right wing entrepreneur, Sean Gallagher (and the part played by RTE in exposing Gallagher). That story is here: Sunday Independent that defended Bertie Ahern - on anti RTE, President Michael D Higgins, crusade http://www.indymedia.ie/article/101574 There could be more to it than that. read full story / add a comment

For the past six months and longer once Libya had fallen to the NATO sponsored 'rebels', we have faced a continuous media onslaught about Syria with reports of protests, shootings, killings, attacks, bombing and so forth. The backdrop to the narrative is that this is part of the Arab Spring which started last year and it is a good thing overall. So many people are probably wondering what really has been happening, given that this is the same media that was cheer leading the Iraq war almost 10 years ago even though at least a million+ are now dead as a result. And yet somehow they want to imply that they are doing the right thing now. We should also recall that this is the same media that is promoting austerity and encouraging us to accept the blame for the mad years of the bubble and as a consequence we should pay up the €90 billion bailout and in the process see all the state services stripped to the bone. They are presenting the uncomplicated truth surely read full story / add a comment

Sean Gallagher is about as useful to Irish society as the cartoon behind his picture and his presidential policies had the same substance as the sugary drip he is sucking. RTE is the victim of a political scam artist who sold his story (for how much?) to the Sindo. This chicken (shit) farmer who tried to scam nearly 60,000 Euro is now trying to scam the public. It is all a big ball of smoke. read full story / add a comment

Predictably, the Sunday Independent goes to town today against RTE over the demise of its favoured candidate Sean Gallagher in the November 2011 Presidential election. There is a non-story on the front page: Pat McGuirk: 'RTE wanted me to gun down Gallagher' RTE claims whistle-blower 'was happy with his Frontline experience' http://www.independent.ie/national-news/rtes-statement-...tmlpo But read the RTE response: RTE's statement: 'McGuirk expressed his happiness with programme experience in fulsome terms' RTE's statement on Pat McGuirk and 'The Frontline' presidential debate http://www.independent.ie/national-news/rtes-statement-....html read full story / add a comment

Very interesting discussion on Today PK (RTE Radio One) of how media misinformation, most of which originated during the 1981 H Block hunger strikes resurfaced during the release of state papers in 2012.
Allegations that:
- Bobby Sands told the Pope's representative that he would come off the hunger strike;
- that Raymond McCreesh's family forced him to remain on hunger strike;
- that the British agreed the substance of the prisoner's demands between the death of the fourth and fifth hunger striker;
are discussed, by journalist Eamon Mallie, historian Eamon Phoenix and 1981 prisoners' spokesperson Danny Morrison. read full story / add a comment

Hands Off the People of Iran unequivocally condemns the ratcheting up of sanctions on Iran in the aftermath of the much-heralded report of the International Atomic Energy Agency on that country’s nuclear capability on November 8. The report did little more than confirm the assessment that Hopi arrived at some time ago: that at worst Iran may be interested in the so-called ‘Japanese’ option. This is nuclear development that stops just short of the capacity to produce a nuclear weapon - but only by a month or so. But this is something that has been commented on many times before.
Despite the fact that this report contained little or nothing that was new (it was little more than a compilation of UK satellite pictures and the pre-existing reports of the CIA and other western intelligence agencies), imperialist leaders have fallen over themselves to express horror and outrage at these ‘new’ findings: read full story / add a comment

On the 15th October 2011 the Ireland Institute on Pearse Street played host to the second annual Raymond Crotty lecture, which was sponsored by the People’s Movement. The topic of this year’s lecture was Rancher and Banking interests in the modern Irish Economy and was delivered by Conor McCabe. McCabe’s recent book, Sins of the Father, is an examination of the Irish economy from the Anglo – Irish Treaty up to the present day.

Eoghan Harris tried to run the 1997 election through Derek Nally, former head of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors. He tried to destroy the Mary McAleese campaign by using Nally. That is where Harris's description of McAleese as a 'Tribal Time Bomb' came from. The bomb blew up in Harris's face when Nally found out. He ditched Harris and his political playmate, John Cadden, when he found out that he was a patsy. Nally was an unusual policeman who challenged the Garda 'Heavy Gang' in the 1970s. Two successive days of entertaining radio as the motley crew opposing Martin McGuinness (Michael McDowell, Fintan O'Toole, Ed Moloney, Gregory Campbell, etc) get their act together. Fintan and Ed have difficulty debating. On Tuesday (Sept 20) on the Pat Kenny Show, Ed Maloney refused to appear with Danny Morrison. That was after imposing the same conditions on the BBC. A very important fellow is Ed, who likes to be able to chose who is good enough to appear alongside his elevated self. An even more important person is Fintan O'Toole, who, after a long innings on Radio Ulster's Stephen Nolan Show (September 21), took up his ball and ran. He was unable to persuade the great unwashed) to be quiet while the great one droned on uninterrupted. read full story / add a comment |
