The entire media seems to be singing in unison on one of the biggest potential movements of public funds into private hands. And it looks like they might get away with it too. surely there's a better way? Here's one suggestion I came up with in all of 5 minutes to get the ball rolling. I invite your hopefully much better suggestions in the comments read full story / add a comment

In a period of mass unemployment in 1920's Germany fascism came to power despite not only the presence of mass Communist and Social Democratic parties but also of significant anti-fascist street fighting. Why did the left fail and what was the attraction of fascism. What about fascist movements today, do they represent a similar threat? Can we even agree a single definition of what fascism is? read full story / add a comment

While many view these days with dread; the outset of climate crisis, political corruption and corporate manipulation blocking healthy change, lack of hope that things can change. Others are starting to see something profound emerging; a re-awakening, an eruption of activity, new and intelligent ways of human interaction. Ecologist Paul Hawken sees this phenoman as "the immune system of humanity finally kicking in" and calls it Blessed Unrest. As another bubble in all this, yesterday saw the first of 25 days of the first "Global Eco Forum"... read full story / add a comment

The 2ND Belfast Anarchist Bookfair recently took place building on the success of the previous year. Stalls were provided by the WSM, Choice Ireland, Just Books, Organise! and Revolutionary Anarcha-feminist group(RAG) as well as groups from as far as England and Scotland including Solidarity Federation giving the bookfair an international flavour. The Bookfair provides a healthy platform for constructive debate and discussion from past to present struggles. To exchange experiences, to reflect and agitate are all essential ingredients for a stronger, more vibrant class struggle anarchist movement in the future. Below are some of the audio recordings from of the public meetings which took place on the day. read full story / add a comment

These dolphins are killed to supply the meat trade, to suppress competition, to prevent pressure on the Whaling and Tuna fish industry and to sell dolphins to aquariums and dolpinariums read full story / add a comment

Since its inception early this year the Belfast branch of WSM continues to go from strength to strength, growing in size and establishing new contacts. At the moment we distribute a 1000 copies of the Ulster edition of Workers Solidarity to homes across Belfast and at political events. We hope to expand our current distribution in the coming months. WSM members continue to take part in the current campaign against the water charges. We have attended and helped to organise pickets in solidarity with fellow workers on struggle in the midst of the current neo-liberal offensive and attacks on our living conditions and workers rights by the neo-colonial administration at Stormont. read full story / add a comment

Amidst the fog of war, and lack of media on the ground, it's anybody's guess as to what is actually going on there at the minute. It is claimed that Russian aircraft attacked military and other targets in Georgia (Russia denies any such attacks happened, and Georgia claims to have shot down some of the aircraft) and a large number of Russian tanks has crossed the border. Each side claims the other fired the first shot. read full story / add a comment

The software used to run the Indymedia website has now been upgraded with the latest release (Oscailt 3.2) which now allows users to post stories and comments with multiple embedded videos and audios. Previously you could only have embedded one video per story or comment. The embedded video was also recently upgraded a few months back to allow for embedded Politube.org video which are preferrable to YouTube videos because of licensing and the fact that they support independent media outlets and activists and are a non profit organisation. read full story / add a comment |
