This is a copy of the press release sent out regarding the 'Save Sligos Cancer Services' (SCSS). The group are organising a huge protest in Sligo this good friday, they are marching on Sligo General and demanding that the management choose whether they are going to represent the people of the Northwest or the private interests and agenda of Mary Harney and the HSE. The SCSS have stated that their memmbers are sick and tired of teh duplicity and lies of both the management in Sligo and the HSE and are no longer willing to accept it. Over 200 people marched today from Andersonstown to the factory in Finachy for a rally, which was addressed by Unite Shop Stewards Charlie Maxwell and John Maxwell, including representatives from the SDLP and Sinn Fein. read full story / add a comment

“Don’t wait for politicians and people high up in the unions- just do it yourself”, says Unite shop steward John McGuire. Protests spread, as workers continue to occupy Visteon/Ford plant in West Belfast. Workers decided to take action on Tuesday after the car parts company announced without notice that administrators are being brought in with the loss of 210 jobs with minimum redundancy payments. A further 400 people will also lose there jobs across the UK. Even those who have been working at the plant for 30 years will be receiving £9,000 in redundancy payment with most getting less. Davy McMurray, from the Unite trade union in Northern Ireland said the way the job cuts were announced was "brutal." "The administrators came in, took a meeting of the workforce and told them their employment was terminated." Visteon took over from the former Ford plant in 2000. On a blustery, cold and damp Friday evening, it was obvious that the shell2sea campaign is alive and well and as strong as ever. A big crowd turned up for the vigil/seisún outside Mountjoy Woman's Prison. The support of passing traffic and pedestrians was very evident by the car horns and well wishers and shouts of "Maura Maura" and "good luck" as well as the many expressions of outrage that she is still in prison. A couple of local men even showd up with a large box of hot chips from the local chipper up the road. read full story / add a comment

In the region of 1,000 people attended the Dublin 2009 Anarchist bookfair at Liberty Hall on Saturday. From the time doors opened at 10.30 to 6pm a constant stream of people came into the venue to browse the books, listen to the speakers or to take part in workshops and discussions. read full story / add a comment

Al Gore: "I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants." Next Monday The largest act of civil disobedience will happen against global warming in the US. A large protest has been called at a coal-fired plant in Washington, D.C, 11,000 people are expected. In the days leading up to the protest, youth climate activists are organizing a conference called Power Shift ’09. Thousands of student activists plan to lobby lawmakers on Capitol Hill, urging them to rebuild the economy through bold climate and clean energy policy. Looks like the "climate camp movement" is continuing to grow globally and momentum is building in the lead up to COP15... Ireland too are organising thing for this summer. The workers at Waterford Crystal occupying the plant are an example to us all. Rather than accept the closure of the business, the loss of all the jobs and the destruction of the area’s premier industry; workers seized the buildings making liquidation impossible for the receiver. read full story / add a comment

Cork is biting back at the recession with a new web-started community which aims to get us outside working together to grow our own food. Cork Food Web imagines a network of community gardens, allotments, urban and rural farms and food parks all over Cork city and county run autonomously by local communities and linked by the shared need to feed ourselves and mind our environment. The website is a ‘social networking site’ so allows users to create their own profile, get to know each other and form groups. In just a few months of existence membership has grown to 154, with members from the city and all across Cork county forming online interest groups, exchanging information and skills and creating events together. read full story / add a comment |
