The Environment Agency is offering 40 summer internships, but says white people need not apply as the positions are only for people of "diverse" backgrounds in an egregious example of official anti-white discrimination.

A 40 minute debate between Joe Higgins, Socialist Party rep & TD form 1997 to 2007 and businessman Ulrick McEvaddy on the Pat Kenny Show on Thursday 19th February about the economic crisis, who is to blame and how can it be solved, is available on RTE: http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0219/rteieextraaudio_av.htm...l,209

The debate deals with issues such as Anglo Irish (where Ulrick commends the golden circle as great men), the banking crisis (where Joe outlines the need for socialist nationalisation of the banks), the pension levy, SR Technics, Aer Lingus and more. It will be of great interest to readers on Indymedia, as an introduction to the socialist alternative to the economic crisis. read full story / add a comment

Cork is biting back at the recession with a new web-started community which aims to get us outside working together to grow our own food. Cork Food Web imagines a network of community gardens, allotments, urban and rural farms and food parks all over Cork city and county run autonomously by local communities and linked by the shared need to feed ourselves and mind our environment. The website is a ‘social networking site’ so allows users to create their own profile, get to know each other and form groups. In just a few months of existence membership has grown to 154, with members from the city and all across Cork county forming online interest groups, exchanging information and skills and creating events together. read full story / add a comment

At all levels, the education system is under attack from the present government.

The savage cuts already announced at primary and second level appear to be just the first steps in what will be a sustained attack on the public sector in general and education in particular – both from the point of view of the provision of the service and the wages and working conditions of those employed in it. read full story / add a comment

Members of the Cork branch of the Workers Solidarity Movement travelled to Waterford today (2nd Feburary) to offer solidarity and support to the workers who are occupying Waterford Crystal. While there we took the opportunity to do an interview with Joe Kelly of the UNITE union and of Waterford Crystal, asking him the kind of questions that fellow workers and readers of Indymedia might be interested in. We also took some photos of a unique Waterford twist on 'canteen culture'. You can hear the interview with which we recorded here.

Following the successful factory occupation of Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago, the workers of Waterford Glass now show the way to fight redundancies and lay offs. In a year where it is estimated that up to 50 million workers are due to lose their jobs, and banks continue to be propped up with billions of dollars and euro, we need to demand that companies are nationalised and jobs defended. The Direct Action by the Waterford Workers now puts it up to the Irish government- who is more important, workers and their families or the tiny financial elite of the banks.

Nationalise the Glass, and let the workers run the factory. They'd do a better job of it.

In Brazil, more than one hundred thousand people are gathering for the ninth World Social Forum. A crowd of some fifty thousand kicked off the event Tuesday with a march through the Amazon city of Belem. The World Social Forum gathers social movements from around the world under the theme of ‘another world is possible.’ It’s timed to coincide with the gathering of corporate leaders in the Swiss town of Davos.

The recent attacks on Gaza by the Israeli state have brought strange bedfellows out of the Irish woodwork. Almost to a man, and woman, those who were vitriolic in opposition to the Irish Peace Process have been four-square behind the slaughter in Gaza.

Dear Pat, (Wednesday 21 January, 2009)

Strange times indeed!

Yesterday Martin Luther King’s dream was realised with Barack Obama becoming the first black president of the united States. Today sees Ireland celebrating, after much movement building based on Hope and Bold-ness of vision, the 90th anniversary since the first meeting of Dail Éireann.

But strangest of all is that we are living in times of such climate catastrophe, which threatens our collective existence regardless of nation and race, and in Ireland this fact is neither sufficiently recognised, nor is sufficient assistance given to those with visions for sustainable change. read full story / add a comment

November saw WSM public meetings about anarchism in Cork and Dublin, with 40 people at one and about 60 at the other. With the crisis and a growing employers’ offensive on wages there is a greater openness to radical ideas, and we will be holding more meetings around the country over the next couple of months. read full story / add a comment

Alrighty netizens? So, the last of the turkey sandwiches have been dusted off and New Year's day hangover has become a memory as faint as that beer stain on the new carpet. Well, we here in Indymedia.ie have a favour to ask. We are hoping you have it in your hearts to extend the season of good will just a little bit longer. Just long enough to come down for banter and dance at a fundraiser we are organizing on January 15th, one of our little irregular efforts to boost the coffers of our decrepit server fund.

As editors, we more than most, realise that Indymedia.ie has seen it's ups and downs in contributions and content over the past while. Editors have come and gone, and the very nature of online publishing and user generated content has been fundamentally changed with the Web 2.0 revolution. But one clear fact remains, once the dust of discussion has settle: the Irish movement have yet to create a media outlet with the reach and scope of Indymedia.ie. Until something better comes along, Indymedia.ie remains a vital communicative node for those in struggle in Ireland, it bonds us together where usually we fracture.

So, here comes the begging hand.....
