A number of high profile Shell to Sea campaigners including 'the Chief' Pat O'Donnell and Maura Harrington sought to appeal certain criminal convictions in cases heard last week at Castlebar Circuit Court from 9th - 11th February. A few of the appeals were successful but some of the convictions were upheld by the court. Judge Raymond Groarke concluded that Pat O'Donnell is a thug and a bully, and Maura Harrington is a vigilante. This article has a look at the reality. read full story / add a comment

Just over a month ago in Copenhagen’s free town of Cristiania there were firey words spoken, followed by baracades of fire, conflict with riot police and mass arrests of cliamte justice activists. The talk, with Noami Klein and others, led to the later arrest of Tadzio Muller for “instigating a riot” under the new Danish “anti terrorist laws“. The talk was our “party night”, December 14th 2009, 2 days before the RECLAIM POWER demo… PUSHING FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE Below is the video compilation of that important talk, what happened after and what that has led to. Reclaim Power was not an end in itself, it was only that hugely difficult and important first step… read full story / add a comment

At last Wakefield has been exposed as the crook that he is. He spread scare stories about the MNR Vaccine knowing that his claims were false. The doctor who sparked a worldwide panic over the MMR vaccine could be struck off after being found guilty yesterday of a series of misconduct charges related to his “unethical” research. Andrew Wakefield, who in 1998 claimed an unfounded link between the vaccination and autism, “showed a callous disregard” for the suffering of children, subjecting them to unnecessary, invasive tests, a hearing found. The General Medical Council (GMC) ruled that he abused his position of trust as he researched a possible link between the MMR vaccine, bowel disease and autism in children. It found that Wakefield and two colleagues acted dishonestly and irresponsibly in carrying out research on children against their best interests and without official permission. read full story / add a comment

As predictions for the death toll from the Haitian earthquakes rise over 200,000, ABC News have reported that planes carrying medical equipment and relief supplies are having to compete with soldiers for the valuable slots at Port-au-Prince airport which was taken over by the US military after the quake. Since the start of the great anti-slavery republican insurrection nearly 220 years ago, Haiti has been presented as a dangerous place incapable of running its own affairs and requiring foreign intervention. Yet the reality is its people were the first enslaved population to deliver themselves from slavery and also carried out what was only the third successful republican insurrection on the planet. The threat of this good example was rewarded with centuries of invasion, blackmail, the robbery of Haiti's natural resources and the impoverishment of its people. This articles summarizes that history of intervention and the resistance to it in order to put into context what is happening in Haiti after the quake read full story / add a comment

3 days ago a group from the SOCIAL AND CLIMATE JUSTICE CARAVAN visited the Canadian embassy in Brussels to seek protection for a man from Colombia who has received death treaths from Colombian Paramilitaries. The Canadian state is responsible for this due to upcoming free trade agreements as well as, along with the US, not signing the charter to protect indigenous around the world. Also Canadian mining business COSIGO RESOURCES are implicated in using these paramilitaries to obtain native lands. read full story / add a comment

Today will see the greatest budget attack on workers in Ireland in a couple of decades with services and pay being slashed. Many unions and other organisations have called protests outside the Dail from the early morning to the late evening. WSM members will be taking part in these protests throughout the day and providing live updates, photos and video from them via our twitter account. During the 24th Novemeber strike we provided 70 updates from the picket lines throughout the day using this method. read full story / add a comment

“The day the political landscape changed forever“, was how Fritjof Capra referred to events of N30, Tuesday 30th of November 1999, in his book The Hidden Connections. He was referring to the day when 1000´s of global justice activists came together and succeeded in shutting down the first WTO (World Trade Organisation) talks in the US using (mostly) non violent direct actions (NVDA) in the north western US city of Seattle. This was the event which brought the “globalisation” debate to the mainstream. It has been misleadingly described as anti-globalisation, what it should be accurately described as is anti corporate globalisation. 10 years on and again there is rubber bullets, tear gas and flames in the streets. This time in Geneva, as people from all over the world converge in the lead up to COP15, the climate change talks in Copenhagen... amongst others, the Social and Climate justice caravan. read full story / add a comment

On the 25th of November 2009 on the Ray D'Arcy Show on Today FM, Ray and his co-hosts said that 'people' should stop playing the "BLAME GAME" in Ireland and just move on. However by the next show the following day (26 Nov '09) a woman by the name of 'Majella' had emailed them with a responce to this topic. I was working at the time, I actually stopped what I was doing and I couldn't believe what I was hearing, it was unreal. I ask you to listen to this 'pod cast' and above all keep an open mind. The link is posted below.... p.s. What you don't get to hear is the "Collector Generals" explanation which isn't much good as a responce to this email... you also don't get to hear the tongue lashing he got from Ray D'Arcy nor will you hear about the Collector Generals update of progress of investigation into this case today. You'll understand all of this after you have listened to the attached link; this will only take 6 minutes of your time, so please listen to it the whole way through!! Thanks. read full story / add a comment

RTÉ Primetime Investigates next Thursday is a special on the death of Michael Dwyer. Dwyer worked for Shell as a security guard in Mayo last year, and while there, made contact with extremists from right-wing militia groups. He joined with a number of these men and spent time in Bolivia, where after an investigation he was killed when police stormed his hotel room. It will be interesting to see what spin RTE will place on the events in Bolivia and Ireland. read full story / add a comment |
